Yes, they are terminating lifetime licenses on July 1st. The simple reason is they want more money.

It puts me in one hell of a position, because I really wanted to buy a comprehensive hunting this year. But, my job is one the of the ones affected by BRAC, so I'm not real sure what to do. They're saying it'll be '09 before anyone gets moved. That's 4 years for me to kill every frickin deer I see. But, the Captain says he's going to work real hard to keep us all at Crane. Has plans for how to do it and so on. What would you guys do if you were me? Gamble $855? Or just start killing fewer deer? I killed 1 in '01, 5 in '02, 3 in '03 and 3 last year. Plus I turkey hunt and coyote hunt. I don't know what to do about it. Figure 3 deer per year, turkey, game bird stamp, small game permit for four years, that's $468. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Just did some more math. If I killed 7 deer per year for the next 4 years, I'd break even. That's a lot of deer. I could legally do it, but getting that many opportunities can be hard. I'd have to buy a muzzleloader. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Hey Jim I totally agree with you on Indiana not caring at all about the sportsman.....it's the dollar they want! One thing you forgot to figure in your math is INFLATION! You can bet your sweet arse that they are going to raise it and continue to. Irregardless of your jod @ crane, would you move out of state if you lost your job??? Also, the license is still good even if you do move out of state so you could always come back and hunt. I truly believe it is about the best investment a sportsman in the state can make (even if most of our hunting and fishing sucks compared to other states). This is even a better deasl the younger you are. If you are young you need to let your parents know as this will pay for its self MANY times over!!

Best investment I ever made. I bought in back before the $708 went up to $1154. Our poor DNR is in shambles and I feel bad for anyone who plans on making the life decision to work for that new director that used to be an attorney. Budgets are being cut everyday and their suggestion to the madness is to raise license fees on the sportsman. It takes a non-sportsman to do something like that. Let them die where they lay.

If nothing else try and get a 0% interest credit card to buy a Lifetime and pay over time if possible for the youngins. I feel bad for them because the state is negatively impacting the next generation of hunters raising fees.

I was actually working for the Indiana DNR when they enacted the Lifetime program. For those of you who can 22 years ago the thought was that you could collect the money up front and put it in a trust and take out on a yearly basis only the interest equal to the price of the licence. At that time the prime rate was 18% and US 30 year bonds were yeilding 15%.

Now you take the same money and put it in a trust fund that is paying 3% and inflation (including gas) is 4% it does not take too long before you run the account dry.

Back then they use to run the paychecks late to collect an extra day of interst. One of the reasons I work for Oregon.
