As I got closer to the range I could see the forest fire raging on the mountains beyond the range and one fire coming down the valley that comes all the way through the range.
I wanted to try out a couple old German shotguns on the skeet range. A dandy Simson two trigger O/U(12ga) and a Sauer hammer sxs (16ga). Both are choked way too tight for skeet but if I shoot a decent score I know they shoot where I look. They both shot about the same for me, actually I did very well on the doubles, more instinctive and I found myself trying to aim on the singles., I had shortened the O/U an inch and installed a thin pad. The sxs being from the 1920's was short enough for me as central Europeans weren't very tall back then. I've been shooting oldtimers for a long time and have my 12ga and 16ga loaders set up for 2.5"(65mm) shells. Like I said interesting morning, smoke billowing up in the back ground, a steady stream water bombers overhead.
On the way home I stopped a little Salvadoran restaurant for a hardy brunch.
The fires have been burning a couple weeks now with temps in the hundreds with nasty winds. Those firefighters up there deserve our prayers.
