I made a couple of  open reed calls but all the work was not worth the open reed sounds to me. I can get tons more sounds out of the reed set up I use and I use it as an open reed call when ever I like. At one time, I even thought about asking Russ at Hogback calls if I could use one of his reeds in my calls. They would fit right in and all is I would have to do was drill the hole for his reed. Some day I might try his reed just for the fun of it. I posted a picture of one of my open reed calls were the reed is part of the bell this will answer some of your questions. I still used the rubber o-ring but just one to help hold the reed and the call together. I have posted a picture of one call in my gallery if you would like to see it. I am only going to let it posted in my Photo Gallery for a little wile since I am not selling any of these calls.
