Is 16x too much scope for 6.5 gren

Hello all!

So im expecting my 6.5 gren upper from SD by the end of the month. Ive narrowed my optics decision down to two models, Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP EBR-1 MRAD Reticle or Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44 EBR-1 MRAD Reticle. I really dont see myself taking shots over 600 yards but who knows, maybe one day ill want to.

Should i save the extra money for ammo and go with the 10x model or go all out and get the 16x model.

For a hunting rifle I would worry about the minimum magnification more than the max. Min 4x is very reasonable even for -100yard shooting in my opinion. 16x max is good enough I would say for 600 and under.

On coyote size targets I would want more than 10x for 600. But who am I to say, If you buy extra ammo and practice enough you could be better with the 10x than the 16x without practice.

I have always liked the 4-16x scopes. I would think that this would be the best choice for the grendel. And I have a grendel and it has a 2.5-16X bushnell elite 6500 on it and I like the 16x for the target shooting. Works well.

Since the round itself is capable of accuracy beyond 600 yards, I would say in no way is 16x "too much" for the Grendel. Is 16x too much for you and the way you use it? maybe... For hunting purposes, I would agree that as long as you retain a fairly low minimum magnification you should be happy. I have a 3.5-10x50 on my Grendel and the only thing I don't like is the 50mm objective. It seems too big and sort of "clunky" on top of my AR.

I'd lean toward the higher magnification. It's awful nice to be able to crank it up and get a better view for precision.

I have the 4-16x50 MRAD PST on my 6.5 while my buddy has the 10x PST on his. Both do the job, but when we were shooting paper at 600m the extra magnification was good to have. If shooting 300m-500m majority of the time I'd rather have the 10x since I can still shoot past 600m is the opportunity was there. But since I like to see how far out there I can go majority of the time I went with the 16x.

Why not look at the 4-16x50 SFP and buy more ammo. It is only $100 my than the 10x and $150 cheaper than the 4-16x50 FFP. I tend to leave mine on 16x minimizing the need for FFP.

I have a 6-24 on mine and plan on changing it out for a 4-16. The 6-24 will go on a future Savage 12FV in 204 that will be used as a bench/close to the road rifle.

i just sold my 6.5-20 leupold off my grendel to buy a 4.5-14 for it. anything much over 14 or 16 power shows alot of heat waves if you shoot them much so i never used my 20 power much over 16 power. snipers could kill a guy with straight 4 powers at distance. i think you can get carried away with to much power. but that's my .02

they used open sights too. how many snipers would have prefered more magnification?

how often do people adjust the power of their scope on stand? if you're having to turn your power ring down when an animal shows you're starting out way too high. i start on 8x and if i would like more magnification i turn it up. the only reason i can get away with 8x is because i have a 12ga in my lap. power range on a scope really depends on how you hunt.

and the comments about heat waves on higher magnification can be related to the glass you've got and not just the power setting. some scopes see through the heat waves significantly better.

I always start my sets at the lowest magnification, about a year back i was hunting with a buddy and a coyote zipped past us at 10 yds lol. I was doing the calling and my buddy was using my rifle, he had the scope at about 10x and needless to say he missed.
