Last night i was calling coons, and I called a fox in and i believe i hit the fox in the breast, it was a head on shot, at about 130 yards, I have killed coon from that distance but they were shot in the head. I found lots of blood and tracked it for almost a half mile. what do you all use on fox? Is a .22 mag big enough. I shot Win Mag supreme bullets which are suppose to be topic notch.
Thanks

I killed a bunch of reds with the 22 mag. but never that far. All my shots were probably under 75 yds. They work good for that distance. At 130 yds, at night, I wouldn't be too sure you hit him in the vitals on a head on shot. Fox are not very big targets at that distance under hunting conditions. If you hit him low and just creased him, he is gonna bleed a lot but you'll never get him. They can cover some ground if not hit in vitals. Was there snow? If so was the blood in the tracks or in the middle etc etc?

Like peterjc said, a .22 Mag is an excellent fox round for shots less than a hundred yards. Still gotta hit'em in the right spot.

Inside 100yds I believe the 22mag is the best caliber there is for fox. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

A 22 Magnum is way more than sufficient for foxes, especially as a call gun . Meaning you call them into decent range for that weapon. I wouldn't start pushing the envelope on my abilities to shoot it at much more than 100yds at night, it is not known for being a flat shooting round and it loses it's energy beyond that real quick.

If he came to 130 yds, learn to lipsqueak his butt on in another 40-50-60 yards closer and then shot placement will be much more precise. A 22 Magnum can be a damaging round if not placed precisely at close range. Fox texture and density is similiar to a housecat, fragile, but again they can carry some lead a good ways if not hit right.

This one was shot with a Remington 597, 22 Magnum, short barreled autoloader at about 35-40 yds with Remington 33 grain Premiers. Good hit opposite side, bad angle going forward -blew out left shoulder and leg, pelt damaged. Fox real dead on the spot. Call em on in.

there was snow, the only problem was that the snow was so hard and it got onto a deer trail and keep running on it then it got down in the creek and ran the ice. went up the bank and went through ceder trees and weaved on and off deer trail.

It's fine for fox. I have a Henry lever action 22 mag. You do have to hit them in the right spot, otherwise all you're doing is giving them a haircut.............
