Is it possible to buy or build a reciever for a Ruger 77/17?

Can a person gather all the parts for a Ruger 77/17 & put it together cheaper that factory weapon? I see a lot of parts but not the reciever. Or am I not looking in the correct place? Anyone have an idea?

Ruger - nor any other rifle manufacturer for that matter other than an AR 15 type rifle plus numerous other semi-auto military varitions - will sell a stripped receiver by itself. I don't believe you can buy a stripped bolt action receiver by itself anywhere.

Unless you are a real knowledgeable machinist with a law degree, by the time you jump through all the TECHNICAL and LEGAL hoops required to build your own receiver, for the same money you could buy a whole truck load of Ruger Model 77/17 rifles.

BCB, Brownell's will sell you a bolt action made by Rem, and Sako. Mauser actions are available through many retailers. As far as Rugers are concerned they will only sell a barreled action.

I realize you can buy COMPLETE receivers from varius manufacturers. I have done it numerous times for building custom rifles.

The way Amos asked the question he seems to be wanting a stripped - with no parts - bolt action receiver. That would be hard to find and extremely hard to MAKE as he asks about when you consider all the legal and technical issues.

Maybe he will chime in and be more specific as to what he wants to do. I interpreted his question as asking about building a bolt action rifle from parts much like you can do with an AR-15 and other semi-auto military look-alikes using a stripped receiver.

If he's wanting a completely assembled bolt action receiver, that's easy to acquire from vendors, but still not a way to save money in most cases. For example, you will pay more for a complete 700 Remington receiver from Brownells - unless you bought during their close-out sale this spring on 700 actions - than you can buy a Rem 700 rifle for in a gun shop, and then remove the barrel and stock and sell those parts, and use the receiver to build a custom rifle from.

Brownells was selling Ruger No.1 and 77 bolt actions a while back. These were actually barreled actions. They also had Remington short actions which are quite popular for making up target and range guns. I think there were a couple other manufacturers as well, but I don't recall who. You might check it out at www.brownells.com Best wishes.
