Is this an unusual colored red?

I've not seen too many reds with bellies this dark black. Most of mine have a grayish look or some black guard hairs. How rare is this coloring for a red fox? I've got her cased, fleshed, and stretched. I was thinking about having a hat made, but afraid to do it if this is unusual coloring. I can get an old coon or a normal looking white bellied red for a hat later and just have this as a tanned case or mounted whole if it is unusual.

Ive seen quite a few reds, but none as dark on the bottom as that one. I would'nt make a hat out of it. Maybe its just me, but i think thats kinda rare.

Thanks VaDeerHunter. I'm starting to lean that way too. Got her fleshed and stretched and drying now. Think I might just get it tanned and keep her cased to show off the belly. I've caught 5 off this farm this year and 4 have had dark grayish-black bellies, but none of the others were this dark black. Hopefully the genes are still in some of the others out there.

Google "Red Fox Color Phases" there's quite a bit of info on off colored Reds. Likewise a lot of pictures in Google Images.

Rocky, I tried that. Lots of farmed fox colors. Closest thing I saw was a crossfox. Not as much red in them though and no white around the face. Caught another this week and it had a hint of black to the belly, just not this prominent. Must be something in that gene pool for that area. None of the other reds I've taken from other areas have near that much black. I've pulled my traps this week and hopefully there's enough left to get some successful breeding and keep the color going.

Actually a pretty good write-up on it here - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1209273/pdf/39.pdf - corey, but that study was done in Canada.

And, that one will give you a biology lesson or two, as it goes indepth into the genetics involved.

Little info on the color phases in the Sierra Nevada Mountains here also... https://r1.dfg.ca.gov/Portal/SierraNevadaRedFox/tabid/618/Default.aspx

If you check the articles behind the pictures on Google, you'll find images from California, Washington, Canada, Alaska... so they are pretty prevalent in the wild in the north and west.

have killed a couple silver fox here that were all black and then one this year that was like half silver, had never seen anything like him before. maybe he is something like that. I would keep him, cool fox
