Is This Too Much?

Been thinking about putting a 6-24 x 40 scope on my ar15 carbine lgth for yote hunting. Is this too much scope? I'll be hunting light to medium density woods along a large open field. Saw several yotes this past fall while deer hunting running across the field & along the wood line.

It is too much - you really need a 2x7 - 'yotes ain't small.

How far to the woodline across the field?

I've missed far more opportunities on coyotes because the field of view was too small than because I didn't have enough magnification.

I'd second that statement.

50 yds +/-

I like ??? x 14 power scopes, that way you can do some load development, then dial it back and go hunting....

Hey----I was gonna second that statement

IMO it is WAY too much scope. If you do any woods hunting at all, anything over 3X on the low end is less than ideal IMO. I use 3-9x40s a lot. They are a good compromise. A 3-400yd shot should be no problem for most at 9X IMO.....

I hunt in the expanses of Montana and Wyoming and my scopes live between 4.5-6x while calling. While most of my calling rifle scopes are 4.5-14x I rarely turn them past 6x while calling and more than a few times my entire scope was filled with hair.

Agreed. Thats going to be way to much. may not even focus at that distance.

Yes this will work. Try before you buy if you can. Some people just don't like red dots.

Uncle Harley...I have two optics for my carbines...One is a standard EO-Tech that I can replace with a 3-12x for open fields and the other is a 2.8-10x...Most of my hunting has been in river bottoms with a substantial tree line and I seldom see a Coyote out in the open where I need the higher power levels...
