Is Winchester making plans

Any one heard if Winchester is going to start making Rifles again? I heard thru a Custom Gun Shop they are buying materials for rifle building to start up in North Carolina. Anyone else heard this? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Winchester never stopped making rifles, just closed the plant in the US. I havn't heard if there going to restart here in the US. One bright note is that Ithaca has re-opened in Ohio I believe. I was really saddened when they closed and am glad to see them back.

I don't know what Winchester is going to do about the 94 and the 70, but I'd imagine that if we do see them come back they will be made overseas.

You can check their website and they might tell you what's going on. There still repairing most of the newer 70's and 94's.

The rumor mill is full of speculation of either Japan(miroku) or South Carolina. I suspect the last of the M-70 recievers were made in S.C. as the recievers were stamped
"licensed by Olin" and not "Winchester Trademark". I feel the Trademark stamped rifles are far better than the licensed made recievers.

If S. C. is the choice I would take a Japanesse made M-70.
There has been very liitle quality control issues out of Miroku where mos tof the Brownings are made.

I read on another board the new Winchester's will be made in South Carolina and that we should be hearing something very very soon. Here is the posts;

"Japan isn't even the running fellas, so you can put this one to rest.

South Carolina is where the Winchester is going to be reborn, not Japan or Portugal.

This is not rumor, but fact.....you guys will see soon enough." from

I thought some of you knew what is going on with them. They have been ordering reamers and dies for rifles, so we will see soon. Thanks for your input Guys!

That would be suicide!!! I'm not from the USA but I sure as hell wouldnt buy a Model 70/94 unless it was made there.

Theres just something about a Japanese/Chinese made Model 94 that makes me want to puke.

It sure doesn't seem to slow down the sales of Brownings!!!

It would be nice if they learned something from CZ on how to build a rifle... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I always bought American made as much as possible. Then I tried CZ. Its a sad, sad day when I can buy a better shooting rifle for less than the American made rifles.

The licensed made guns were a far cry from true Winchester quality.

Buy a pre-war 1894 and compare it to a new 94, the difference is like night and day.

I beleive the contract went to Miroku (Browning by any other name) some months ago IIRC. I would venture a guess that the "South Carolina" possibility would mean the FN plant located thereabouts. That would be wonderful IMHO. The FN factory would be an improvement over the factory winchester mod 70's mado for however long now on worn out equipment in New Haven, whereas FN's facility from what I understand is fully CNC and state of the art, capable of outproducing the old plant, at much lower cost as well as in much less space, with BETTER tolerances. I'd bet they would be as well machined as the older ones.
