What do you guys think about using jack rabbit distress here in the east. I've heard that it is actually a pretty good sound to use. But, I wasn't sure since there no jack rabbits around here. Thanks
I have called in most of my coyotes using a combination of Lightning Jack followed by Bay Bee Cottontail. Most of my hunting is in Georgia. That being said I think that just about any sound awakens certain instincts in different animals. I once called in a doe with a pig in distress. Try different combinations until you find the one that works for you.
Don't worry about distress sounds of animals that are not indigenous to your area. Coyotes don't care one bit if it is the only porcupine or jackrabbit in the state.
They don't discern the species. They just know something is getting its butt kicked and wanna see what it is. I've used jack rabbit many times but my go to around here is fox pup distress, mostly because it sounds like it's really gettin hammered. Enticing.
I have had good success here in PA with lightning Jack, but this year bay bee and especially cagie cottontail on the FoxPro has been extremely productive.
Coyotes can't differentiate between the 2. All they hear is a small distressed animal. Free food. Don't be afraid to use prey sounds of animals not indigenous to your area.
I've wondered the same thing. I've avoided that sound for that exact reason. I can see the benifit of using any of the sounds. I've refrained from using fawn distress Bc it's not spring lol I'll be trying it out in the morning!
Jack in distress has been one of my most productive calls. However Snowshoe Hare also calls in the west coast coyotes and there are none in sight here. Guinea pig sounds, and also Kitten sounds sometimes brings them a running. Don't be afraid to try new sounds. You never know what will happen. I have had bobcats come in to Goat distress as well. Give them all a try, But hopefully, not all on the same stand.
I have had NC gray fox, coyote, bobcat, hawks, owls, crows and even a jackal in S. Africa come to jack rabbit hand call. No doubt none have these have heard a jack rabbit before.
