Jackrabbit distress calls?

I use a Tally Ho, I've had this call for a very long time and swear by it. It is the open reed type.
The address that I have is: Tally Ho, Box 726, Custer SD 57730

Merlin007,

Right now a have a little over 40 calls in my call box. 1/3 are closed reed jackrabbit calls of some variation. Another 1/3, roughly, are open reed calls that cover a pretty wide spectrum of sounds that include a jackrabbit. This makes for a total of about 30 different jackrabbit distress calls. Exactly what kind of information are you looking for?

Of course I use the ones I make, but for commercial calls, I use the Sceery, and the Primos calls are hard to beat. There are a lot out there. The key, is not so much what call you use, but how confidence you have in the call you are using. While it may be nice to try to use a call that will match the sounds of the prey the coyote is used to encountering, this isn't like trout fishing where you might try to "match the hatch". If it sounds hurt, he will come to investigate.

I was just trying to see what everyone was using. I have been using primos and johnny stewart calls. Nothing custom but I would like to get some to compare to the manufactured stuff.

My answer to your question on Jackrabbit call will probably not go with what most people think.

I don't use this sound (jackrabbit) and reason being, I do believe a coyote can hear the sound of a high pitch cry of a cotton tail much better.

Yes, I have used the Jack sound many years ago and have not called as many dogs with it as compared to the cotton tail. I have put away all my "metal" reed calls now and I go exculsive with the "open" reed style.

I wasn't trying to be elusiveto your question. I guess the call that I go to more often than anything else is the Crit'r call standard. I can make calls from high pitched squeaks to howls and everything in between.

hello, for a closed reed jackrabit, i really like the screery ap-3 it is expensive around $18 bucks, you can remove the mouthpiece easily & it splits in 1/2 to make changing a reed a whiz !! the barell is rubber & feels good to squeeze while calling. now that being said the last several months i use open reed 90% of the time. mostly the sceery open reed double barell very loud !! or the tally ho for a higher pitch. good luck...dave

The only time I use a Jack rabbit call is when I am set up on native grass (River valley or creek valley) and adjoining pastures. I use a Sceery on calm day's and a Circe on the day's with some wind. Have had luck with both calls.
Most of the area I hunt is farmland and bush patches, so there is not alot of Jack's here.

Coyote Control, I have a theory about the jackrabbit/cottontail thing, Jackrabbits run faster therefore energy expenditure is greater. Easier to catch a couple slow running cottontails than to catch one fast runnin jackrabbit. I'm probably wrong, but it's just a theory.
