ok i have just been on a shopping spree. i bought a few new calls but not the one that i really wanted. i cannot seem to find a cottontail hand call anywhere around here in southern, ohio.every dealer or sporting goods store is only carrying the jackrabbit. my question is will this mouth call be affective here even though we dont have jackrabbits. i know that the only real difference is the raspiness of the call compared to the cottontail. will the call be useful or will they know that something is up. i just assumed that maybe the instincts would kick in and they would still come a running.

If you blow it, they will come. I hunt a lot of areas with no jacks and the calls still work. You can really reach out there with that call if you need to get loud. Good luck and good hunting.

thanks for the vote of confidence. i will definitely be using it now. i just wanted to make sure that it would be a usable call. thanks

Nightwatchman,
Lonnie is right about the fact that it will call in predators, but if jackrabbit is the only rabbit in distress calls sold around there then most people are using them. If most people are using them then it might pay off to order a cottontail and use it. Being a different sound the yotes are more likely to respond to something new and unheard. This all depends on the amount of calling pressure on the coyotes though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Just my two cents.

im glad you mentioned that i did not take that into consideration. we dont have jackrabbits in ohio, to my knowledge but for some reason these dealers and shop owners are stocking the calls. i cant find a dealer anywhere close and i have been to almost 20 different shops looking for just a cottontail distress mouth call and noone has them. do you have any suggestions as to a good mouth call and a web site to order it from .thanks

My favorite hand calls right now are my new ones I got from Lone Howl. For a place to get mass produced call there is always Cabelas and bass pro. I know there are a lot of places on the Internet to get them for cheaper, but I cant remember the addresses. I know some of the other guys on the board will know exactly where to point you. Hope this helps. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

A few3 web searches will do wonders for you. I don'rt have the sites handy but just type in the names of the company. Sceery wildlife products, JStewart wildlife calls, Knight and Hale Game calls, Haydel game calls, Burnham Bros calls, Lohman game calls, HUnters specialties.

We even have pop up adds for Js calls on the board if you watch for them. You can order direct from nearly all of them.Just fire up the hard drive, warm up the printer, and rub your lucky credit card. All the magical little genies will apear parcel post /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Jimmie

NW, I sometimes intentially tune my call to sound raspier, like a Jackrabbit, just to throw in a different sound to keep them guessing. It doesn't matter as long as it sounds like a little furry animal is dying they can be fooled. One day I was roofing a building on the edge of town I kept hearing what I thought was someone blowing on a mouse squeaker. I was looking around and lo an behold it was the neighbor's dog playing with a rat. Predators in nature know what a distress sound is and it gets their attention. If you are looking for a cottontail closed reed call I can set you up with on in either cherry wood or deer antler. If you are interested post your email.
