I have a female Jagd and love her to death. That being said, I think curs make better dogs for the majority of hunters out there. Very few hunters need the intensity of a Jagd or have the time it takes for working with them. They hunt wide and chase everything, and I mean everything. They do not hunt for you or with you and require a lot of control training. They hunt more like hounds but aren't as good at that and you can't just go out and hunt/train them like a hound. Jagds will do things that hounds won't/can't do and are more versatile, have GREAT noses and hunt hard. A more traditional dog for what you want to do (coon, cat, hog combo dog) would be the Blackmouth Curs and the Catahoullas.

Learning to train and hunt Jagdterriers is an education in itself.

My female jagd is now 12 years old and we've turned her into a house dog now. She is fearless and will hunt anything with fur BUT she will not stay on a tree. I talked to a bear hunter in eastern nc who used jagds with his hounds. He too was impressed with their gritty disposition but was disapointed with their treeing ability.
I know there are some good treeing jagds out there so look long and hard for the right bred pup.

I have a 7 month old, he is my first one and so far am really impressed with how smart he is and how gritty he is, for his size he is not afraid of anything. Take a look on Jagd hunt.com, texas jagd message board, and knite hunt kennels the fellas on there will be able to tell you everything you need to know

The jags are good dogs, but as tough as they are you may want more size for the bigger game,(hogs, bears, lions) Not saying they can't get it done ,just letting you know that you may be stitching ,or burying more dogs than you like.
I like jags, but can't run them because they "have more heart, than brains" They will try to fight any thing,no back up, and no quit, till they hit the tree.Once the game is up some will just leave the tree looking for the next race.Do your research on the dogs, and if they suit your style have fun with them.

My pic would be a cur, or airedale if you are [beeep] bent on a terrier. I have one I've treed coon, pheasant hunted, bunny hunted, etc. Was planning on a bear hunt, but I just sold her. The new owner my use her for that and coons.

I agree with above about curs being better match for most people. You had better be good with dogs to handle a Jagd or they will OWN you.

As said above you need to be very consistent in training Jagd's. They can test even the most patient man. I try not to loose my cool with them but it is a constant struggle. They can really get into "moods" and are very driven. My current pups have taken after catching, and then killing and ripping up toads. They are relentless. They grab them, puke, repeat about 100 times until they are foaming at the mouth. Then drop it and "pounce" it to death and then rip it up, puke, and repeat. They LOVE to dig and are VERY focus after what ever they think is down there. They are also very comical and I find myself laughing at their antics daily. Life is different when you own Jagds.

The curs I've had seem to pretty much train themselves.

But....they are different breeds with different specialties.
