Darn, things like that really make me feel old.
I feel the same way !! The artists I listened to as a young pup are passing so quickly it seems especially in the last couple of years.
Somewhere around 1968 (though my time line may be off, as my memory isn't what it used to be) I went to see Glenn Campbell in concert. It was held "in the round" at a major university, which was quite a big deal in itself, as back in those days a lot of big name performers were playing smaller clubs and dances, etc. Those that have seen the movie "Ray", but were too young to have been around during that time period, the movie was very accurate IMO in portraying the type of very small venues even big name performers frequently were forced perform at.
Anyway, Glenn put on an absolutely outstanding performance, and he had hired the local symphony orchestra, bringing his own rhythm section with him. So about half-way thru the concert, he announced he had brought a special guest with him, and his name was Jerry Reed.
This was so early in Jerry Reed's career, that no one knew who he was. He and Glenn did several tunes together, mostly featuring the excellent guitar work of both of them. This really pushed the concert "over the top", and made for a truly unforgettable concert, and the audience couldn't get enough, and resulted in lots of "standing O's".
They truly brought down the house !!
Within a year, maybe less Jerry Reed had become a household name, and rightly so given his level of talent. I feel very fortunate to have been able to see him perform live. I was never a fan of his movies, but really appreciated his music.
I will miss him !!
Hangtime.
