Judging coyote distance

Is there a rule of thumb for judging coyote distance in flat terain? I hear a certain pack of dogs everytime I go out in the area, but can't tell if there 300 or 3000 meters away.

Well let me ask you this I assume you are setting up in realitivly the same area each time. Do they usually sound like they are on your backdoorstep (so to speak) or do they sound a ways out? I ask this because it is really hard to tell /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif, were not there, know what I mean /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif.

While looking through binos, I feel I can pinpoint their location. But I usually don't see the yotes and whn I put the binos down, it seems like their at about 1000 meters away, but sound closer. I've read that this is normal, and they are definitely louder and further than estimated. I just didn't if there was a way to think- In flat terrain, if I can hear him, that means he can't be further than X yards away. See what I'm saying?

All I know is,on a calm, cold morning, a pair of coyotes or three, can sound like a half dozen, plus sound like they are in your hip pocket, and actually be a quarter to half mile away. If a coyote howls, and your within 200 yards, you;ll swear it's right on top of you....just the way sound carries.

It ia amazing how loud these dudes can howl and how far their sound carries. There is really know way for us to tell you this the only thing you can do is to go out hear it yourself spot them and over time you will be able to better judge for yourself how far away they are.

It's not exactly an answer to your question about coyotes but...here in North Texas where it's not so flat and lot's of trees, depending on the day/evening and weather conditions it's very easy to hear my bird dogs barking at my FX3 sounds out to 3/4 mile away and sometimes further. It was just as surprising to me to find that they can hear my FX3 distress sounds just as good or better and that's with it not turned up loud at all. I know they're hearing it because one of them in particular hates the thing and I can tell it's her that starts the ruckus. When the sound stops she stops. I don't know about you but it would be a near miracle for me to spot a coyote at 1,000 yards even with binoculars unless I knew exactly where it was because of the lack of contrast between their color and the terrain background.

For one thing, I've lost more then 60% of my hearing because of shooting so many coyotes I didn't hear....But I did see them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
ChileRojo, I'm surprised you can still hear with all the shooting you've done over the years.
