Just getting ready to get started coyote hunting....what all do I need???

Hey everyone,

I have a couple of farms that have alot of coyotes on them. I am wanting to start doing some predator hunting later this spring. Can someone give me an idea of what I'm going to need to get into it? I know I'll need a gun and I'm either going to use my .308 to start with or I'm thinking about buying a .223 bolt action or upper for my ar15.

As far as shooting sticks can someone recommend a good pair. I've bought a few pair from bass pro and other places and have been very disappointed with their quality once they have shown up.

Calls/decoys: I've seen some of those little tails that move around to decoy(although I don't know the name) and I'm sure I'll need a couple of hand calls/electronic calls. Can I get a few suggestions on these?

What other odds/ends do most everyone carry with them when chasing yotes? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Try typing "shooting sticks" on the search feature. Probably more info there than you could read in a day.
Good Luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

The Shooting Sticks I use are the telescoping Stoney Point units. I can adjust them down to prone shooting or up for supported standing position (which I do use, here in AZ).

Carry some 6,7,or 8 power binoculars. Get the best glass that your budget will support. Poor glass means missed target opportunities. Not worth it in the long run (you should get 10-20 years service from these binos).

BobcatX said is right: use those calls, they are very effective (I carry them every time I go out, in addition to my FoxPro w/remote).

What is the distance that you will be hunting, typically? If you are usually going to shoot to a likely maximum of 200 yards, I recommend a quieter rifle. I use a .221 Fireball CZ M527--very accurate (sub 0.50 MOA) , relatively quiet, powerful enough (50 grain bullet @ 3,000 fps)

I drag a 550 cord that has the end (6-8") soaked in rabbit urine when I go from my vehicle to my stand and from stand to stand. I just use a large safety pin and attach it to my Natural Gear 3-D cammo "jacket". I have watched coyotes run up my back trail on the way to the "screeming thing" (me). Of course, I shot them. I once had a coyote run over my leg (I was in prone position facing FP unit) on the way to the FoxPro (placed in front of me, about 20 yards), I did not get that one--laughing too hard at the surprised look on Mr. Coyote's face as I shifted position to shoot him. By the way, I was on wide open ground with no bushes or other vegitation around me. Gotta like that NatGear Cammo.

Bring: a knife, water, compass, camera (I use a "disposable" camera), couple of meal replacement bars, toilet paper, extra ammo, pistol with extra magazine in belt holster, flash light, cell phone (I keep it turned off while I hunt), thick foam pad on which to sit (the more comfortable you are, the more still you will sit)--this keeps your "tail" dry from morning dew.

I did not think I had so much to write in this response, please forgive the extended length. Hope it helps.

Oh, one last thing: as soon as you begin your call series, have your rifle up and be ready to shoot (the advantage of the shooting sticks is that you can have your rifle ready to go and pointed in the most likely direction of approach). I have had coyotes run at me from their concealed position, just 15 yards distant at the first screem of my Tally-Ho.

Cheers,

Hey Welcome aboard Lee. As far as decoys go, we use the predator supreme, and the mini extreme. You can check them out at decoyheart.com. They really work well to get the critters eyes away from you. Allows you to get away with alot more movement. Good luck, and keep us posted. Jeff

Another thing you need to know is never ever ever let your guard down, I did and it cost me my first solo coyote. I was out one mornin and after watching them go away from 600 yards I figured they beat me again and my hunt was over, bein new i thought while i'm out here I might as well play with the open reed call to learn what I could make it do, at home the dogs hate when i practice /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif after making several variations of diferent calls, I caught movement to my right, when I looked I seen a coyote standing not 40 yards from me, them incredibly keen eyes spotted me turn only my head, while in my ghillie suit through a bush between us. That dog got away cause I let my guard down and I failed to get the first coyote I called in all by myself.

Lee, you got some excellent advice, especially from Karl. What I would say is to limit your movement at all times in the field, even going to your stand. Good luck!

Thanks for all the help everyone....I think I will probably go ahead and order a fox pro caller next week, a decoy or two, and a couple of hand calls. That should more or less get me started until the fox pro comes in. I'm sure I'll have a few more questions before I get started. Thanks for all the great advice!

We had success with just a sceery ap-6, shootin stix, a hot seat(cold up here) and a gun one could shoot reasonably well. We didn't even really camo up too much, called in my first as a pair on about my 3rd try just wearing my old carthart coveralls sittin up against a fence post...75 yrds before they busted me. Didn't over call but tried to make the sets sound like something was really gettin worked over hard. Kinda surprised me it worked. The ap-6 is a top producer for us and so beginner friendly to use...very easy.

THanks for all the help guys. I'm going to order some sniper styx tomorrow. This afternoon I ordered a fox pro 532B with remote and several accessories, foxpro decoy, predator supreme with decoy heart, a few handcalls from allpredatorcalls.com. Looks like once that stuff starts showing up I'll be ready to go. Thanks again for all the advice/help!
