Will be visiting my son who is stationed near Wichita. (Air Force)
Will be there sometime in February. Would like very much to do some "Coyote Calling"
Any recommendation on where to hunt coyotes in Kansas would be GREAT!
Thanks!!

Check with the wildlife dept. on WIHA(walk in hunting areas). I don't remember what dates they are open but I have had some luck calling on these places. There is more land in this program the farther west you go. I don't think there was that much in the Wichita area. One area that I called on in SW Kansas had 5000+ acres. Hope this helps. Lonnie

Most of the WIHA are closed as of Jan 31st. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Many of the public hunting areas however, do remain open year around. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif These are located around federal and/or state operated lakes.
The closest public hunting areas to Wichita are in Butler county.
El Dorado state park and wild life area, being one of them, has 13,000 acres. Its north and east out of Wichita.
There are a couple of callers who frequent this board who are from the Wichita area. You might try contacting them for more info.
Good luck and have a great day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you don't mind a little drive you can call alot of them in at the Pratt Sandhills Wildlife Area. It will take about an hour and a half but it is worth it. If not ElDoprado has a few there to.

Thanks for the INFO,My son and I will have all day Sat&Sun, to hunt "Mr Coyote" so alittle drive is no big deal!
If we get LUCKY? can you recommend a good place to get a coyote mounted?

PDshooter,
There are a few places in Wichita and the surrounding are to get one mounted. I would look in the yellow pages to find them. A good one I know of is Parsons Taxidermy in Derby(close to the air base). Give them a call and I am sure they could hook you up.

Thanks SnakeMan, for all the "INFO" I'm going to take you up on Pratt Sandhill area. Do you do alot of calling there?
Looking forward to seeing my Son, and get some "Trigger Time" in with him.
Do you do any PD shooting?

Thanks again /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PDshooter,
I have done a fair bit of calling here and there out there. It is a real good area and there are alot of coyotes there. You will also find alot of jack rabbits as well. I shoot pd's as much as I can and there is a town out there along the same road you take to get to sandhills. If you see the farmer in the field out there he might let you hunt it. I think the pd town is about 4 miles north of 54 highway on the east side of the road. You will have to look close to find it but if you see the farmer out there you can get permission pretty easily. as far as the Sandhills area goes there is alot of land to hunt on. I have been out there alot and never see another hunter, just the occasional farmer or rancher driving on the road. If you want to get a map of the area you can go to the Wildlife and Parks Office at 29th St North and Woodlawn. They have maps for all of the wildlife areas and will be able to answer all of the questions you have about licences and sell them to you. Hope this helps and if you have any more questions let me know. I am hunting coyotes at El Dorado on thursday. I will have to let you know how I do.

You might look at Elk County( east and south) of Wichita. My son-in-law tried some wha land there(big rolling grassland type terrain) before Christmas, didn't get anything, but said it looked real good. The area around pratt and greensburg to the west has quite a few coyotes, but the sight dog guys keep them spooky. Good luck and keep us posted!

WOW!!!!!Thanks! Lots of good Info, I will let you know how we do. I hope for alittle snow on the ground by 14-15 Feb.
Hav'nt been to KS in over 20yrs. Alot more open then Illinois (PRI) The "FIRST" words out of the farmers mouth! around here is "NO"!!!and Hell No!!
Have a spot down by the Illinois river(220+Miles)from my house I can hunt, only because I was they in 93 Flood Duty, and became friends with the farmer.Bag a doe a few yrs ago.
Do most of my PD shootin in S.D But most of the "Good Dog Towns" are just shot out by July. Then it's a 10min wait till the next shot.
I use a Win70 Varmint in .223 had it re-barreled 3yrs ago with a Lothar Walther S/S

Thanks...PDshooter

I live in Pratt and work in Wichita. I am new to the sport, but do have some nice private land around Pratt and Barber county that I can hunt. Feel free to email me. I would love to help out if I can.
Just saw a coyote Monday while quail hunting. It was only about 50 yards away and just stood there looking at me. I started walking and noticed a covey of quail on the ground. It wasn't until the birds flew and we shot that the yote took off across the field.

app,
To bad the quail were there. Could have been one dead yote. It is good to hear that there are still some quail left out there. I haven't had much luck on quail out there in the last couple of years.
