Keeping hounds in the house?

Has anyone ever kept there hounds in the house or a hound. I ran into a guy last weekend that has all of his hunting dogs as house dogs, and they didn't lack in performance. Does it seem to work this way with most hounds or does it ruin them? Or is ever dog different and some can and some cant?

The best coon hound I ever owned lived in the house. I'd have to drag him off the couch in the evenings to get him in the truck. Finally I figured out if I got my light and leash out first, he'd be standing by the front door waiting on me!

I have a Catahoula cur and a Catahoula/Black and Tan cross that lives in the house. They get lots of hunting and exercise and do great.

Trapper nailed it. Look back at that post. We all posted pics of our dogs that live in the house when they are not rippin fur.

One of my hounds that I call Marie. I got her 8 years ago as a 8 week old pup from NY. It was dead winter when I got her and had nothing to put her with so she came in the house till it got warm.
She is my best handling hound ever.
I think the bonding they get while in the house means a great lot. If they have the drive and hunt the house thing wont stop them.

Vargy

I'm a big hounds man so i have lots of big dogs. plot etc
i put them in a shed not a close one but one that is open in the front we use the dog house that you dig a hole in the ground about a half a foot and then put the dog house in it and put straw in it and they stay warm it has been -30 for about 3 of 4 days now ever morning when we go out and we do not get out of the truck much but this morning we found a hot track and we dump it was getting warming steel -10 they ran really really good my dogs are for bears and cougars and the do fine in the cold all of them do good
like i said it has been -30 and my 5 months old pups that you can see in my pic and that have a above the ground dog house that is insulate and has straw and with both of them in it they are warm and they love the snow cant wait to run them

my three are house pets, and they always perform up to my expectations when i take them out.
like it has been said,if they are bred right, have the desire to chase they will only be better if in the home.

My preference is for hunting dogs to be in the house...however,my daughter's and wife's preference is for their Persian and rip-rap cats to be in the house.
The result of keeping Staghounds in the house with a target rich environment would be carnage. The Stags stay outside.

New Mexico Hound dog men... You will like this one.

I was told about two brothers that had hounds they lived on there ranch, they didnt like doing dishes or none of that kinda stuff, so there dining room table was a pic nic wood table, well wouldnt you know it, they took two steel pie plates and nailed them to the table, when they took turns cooking they would put the skillet on the floor and open the door to let the hounds in, the hounds would lic the plates and skillet clean.
I wonder how many dinner guests they would have for lunch.. lol

My first ever hunting dog ole Rebel "MTN Cur" was 6wks old when I got him. Was my best dog for most anything. Could run him at night on coons, take him out in the day and he would run hogs and bear. Best [beeep] dog ever. But he lived in the house 99 percent of his life except those dirty coon hunting nights I would stick him in the kennel, then I'd clean him up the next day. He died on me last yr at the good ole age of 8. But know his partner he was helping teach is the inside replacement for him along with a load load 3 month old bluetick/walker cross.
But when I first got into it everybody in the world told me no you dont play with them pet them or anything except feed and hunt thats it. But I figured the opposite if you treat them right they'll hunt better for you and mind better. Know not all them stay inside the rest stay out back in the dog condos. I like to treat them right as one of the family.

I like my dogs to "handle well" The only way they learn that is to be handled. I can't have ten dogs in the house, nor would I want to. I also remember "don't pet them, talk to them , just take them off a chain and hunt them then stick them back on a chain." That was how Grandad, and my uncles did it, and they had hounds that were out of control. I handle all of my dogs at least for a few mins every day, the decoy dogs that are in the house, are just as good as the ones that live outside.I have freinds that have there cat/bear dogs in the house. Their dogs hunt good.
I think it matters more whether or not a dog is hunted, than whether or not it lives in the house.
