Kerosene Heaters???

Are these things dangerous in a tightly closed building? I was helping a friend put the wings on his airplane yesterday in his very tight hangar. 30 degrees so we fire up an 85,000 BTU heater. After about an hour I became real dizzy and light headed. We turned off the heater and opened a door and after 15 minutes I felt fine.

Can these heaters seriously lower the oxygen concentration or put out CO? Being at 5100 feet probably doesn't help.

Red Blood cells, carry oxygen to organs/tissue. CO has 200x the affinity to attach to the Red Blood cells OVER oxygen.

CO, CAN build up/[remain] in a human over repeated/continous exposure over a length of time, to a harmfull level. Not good.

A couple of yrs ago. Two people in my county who were camping in a tent[Fall time]. Died from from useing a kerosine heater in a "closed" tent...No exhaust or fresh air to circulate.

Personally any appliance that puts out CO[exhaust] into the living quarters. I would use "sparingly" for a "temporary" heat source. Generally, the elderly & children are the 1st to develope signs of CO poisioning. But, not etched in stone.

Some yrs ago, we carried out a whole family with CO poisioning[bad furnace]. One of them was unconscious.

Severe CO poisioning victims, generally are treated in a Hyper Baric Chamber with saturated oxygen.

Unless, a heater has 100% combustion, it will produce CO from its exhaust. Even if a fuel heater that is 100% combustion. Will still produce CO2[Carbon Dioxide], which can be an aphyxiant.

Glad you're OK Jack. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Which one of you has their A&P license? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Or is it a homebuilt?

Get a carbon monoxide detector and use it anywhere you are using a portable heat source.

+10,000 on that!!!!!!! for any heater that has combustion type heating. If you don't have one in your house, get one. Darn good advice Shooter44n45.
