I'm a long way from Oklahoma. I'm visiting a buddy in Anchorage this week, and we fished Ship Creek in downtown Anchorage yesterday. Simply Amazing!!!!!!
On the morning tide, we probably saw 40+ king salmon caught, and it was literally shoulder-to-shoulder down there. Even though it was extremely crowded, I still can't get over how friendly and helpful all the locals are. My hat is off to you Alaskans. I haven't run into a single person who behaved like an a-hole in the fishing areas. You Alaskans are making my trip very memorable and enjoyable, so thanks to all of you!!!!!
With all the fish being caught, my buddy and I didn't hook into a single fish on the morning tide. We got back out at low tide in the evening, and after watching some of the locals hook up I inquired about what they were using, how they were rigged, and how they were fishing. They were more than happy to help me, and after just a short time, I hooked up with my first king. What a rush!! It was a smallish king, and I hooked it on a yarn fly. After a long struggle, my line broke at the knot. I had planned on releasing that one anyway, so that was alright. A short time later, I hooked into a 30+ pounder, and had to chase it a good 150 yards downstream, again.... people were more than happy to accomodate me as I had to duck under their lines and they all reeled in when they heard me holler those beloved words "FISH ON!!!" After I finally tired the fish out, we saw that it was foul hooked behind the gill, so my buddy released it for me. It was awesome.
Today I'm literally sore all over from fighting fish. I want to reiterate again how great the people here have been to me. The people here are making this a trip of a lifetime for me, and they are going out of their way to be courteous and helpful. I've got another week to fish, so I'd better get after it.
