Knight&Hale EZ Howler Coyote Call

Im wondering if any of you all have this howler. Do you like it? I have this howler. I just now found out how to get the right sound. Im going camping tonight out at a place we hunt, and i was just wondering if i can howl a couple times at night and see if I get a response or not? There is alot of yotes out at this place. I dont plan on hunting them, just gonna call and see if i can get a response. I have yet to call a coyote up. But basically the reason why i havent is because my calls arent just the best out there. I plan on stocking up this coming Christmas. Might have to get one from you Rich.

I have a coyote hunting video by primos and they use the Regulator 10 and 14 mostly in it. WHat do you all think of those calls? They sounded good on the video but that doesnt say much. What do you all think? Thanks

It will work but i could offer you some suggestions. I would try to find a tally ho (www.callingcoyotes.com) and start with that. Then i would also go with the lohman distress calls , they are wonderful and easy to use. For a howler i would recomend a sceery or a johny stewert ch1.

It takes some practice to learn to work a Talley-Ho worth a darn. Pretty much the same for most Open Reed calls.

If your just starting out, get some closed-reed calls for your distress making, something like Ed Sceery AP2 or AP3. They are much more forgiving and really work great. Work up to the Open Reeds later on.

Have to agree with Robb. The Tally-Ho could be a little frustrating as your first open reed. And they are notorious for needing some tinkering to get them to be reliable. Once fixed they do sound great. I really like the Tally-Ho but must confess when I first got one it sat in the drawer for a year or so before I figured out how to fix it.

If you got your howler working correctly, there is a good chance you will get a response. Yours is one of the few I have heard of, actually working. LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you want to try a good closed reed howler, try a Haydels. They are small, light and sound very realistic. It is one of the few closed reeds that do a decent pup distress.

When you do decide to move up to a open reed call, there are many good ones out there. You might consider giving the Critr-Call Standard and Pee Wee a try. Very easy to operate and will make more sounds than you will ever use. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good luck

Stealth I have been using a Knight and Hale for about 5 years now. It is a little different than yours but it is a good one. It will and can make them respond. It is hard to make a lot of differemt sounds such as a pup in distress but it is good for barks yips and howls. The one that I have is the first generation and I have had it so long that it has been modified due to the plastic tube on the top wearing out. A Woods Wise Doe in Heat Bellow wooden barrel fits it just right and isn't as cold as that plastic either /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Asd for a closed reed call ..they are easier for a beginner to work and most of them have the same reed. Thats right, the same reed made by the same people. MY 20 Dollar Sceery has the same reed as my 9 dollar Circe lol... They sound slightly different because of barrel material and design. I have called more with the Circe than any other call I have owned unless you go to electronics......... Good luck>>>>>>>James L.

StealthArcher,
I havn't heard the Primos howler in action, so I can't really give you an opinion on it. The Crit'r call "magnum" is the most realistic sounding factory made howler that I have heard. I had a Sceery howler here for a short time and did get it to sound pretty good after fitting it with a custom reed. There are some callers out there who simply use an open reed predator call like a Crit'r call "standard" for their howling. The small barrel on these predator calls will not cut it if you want realistic sounding "adult" coyote howls. Howling with these little calls will bring in some coyotes that are not too far away and it isn't too windy. The large barrel on a good howler acts as a megaphone which gives you more volume and more realistic adult coyote sounds.
EDIT: Sorry Stealth, I looked again and noticed that you asked about a Knight & Hale and not Primos. I havn't tried the Knight & Hale either. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

With all due respect to Rich cuz I know his knowledge runs very deep /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif , I really haven't noticed a need for more volume when howling in my region. In fact, I have seen many coyotes respond to low volume (and low quality sometimes) howling from suprisingly far distances. Certainly not suggesting the Pee Wee is a howler by any stretch of the imagination. However in certain situations it comes in handy as one though.

In the open areas, quite often I get to watch the coyote respond from a good distance. It is obvious that they can hear the howling very well. If the little Critr-Call Standard reached out any farther, I would have to wait an hour for the coyote to travel that far. LOL.

When calling, I want to call to area of specific size usually. I don't really want to reach out and touch someone. I would much prefer too little volume, than too much. I'm usually going to make more than one stand on a ranch. I prefer my howling not cover the whole ranch the first stand. There will be several key spots for stands. I feel all coyotes within a large geograpical area hearing my howling, followed by gunfire, is a negative thing. If coyotes for miles around hear howling and then a gunshot over and over, it will hasten the educational process in my opinion. I like to have less impact on an area.

The Magnum is a great sounding call and to be honest is not really excessive in volume but it is just a little obtrusive for my everyday calling needs. It works very good and would be an asset when windy but has shown no perceivable advantage over the smaller, handier, more versatile, Standard under normal calling conditions. For that I prefer a call that can perform multiple tasks well.

As far as sounding realistic...I haven't heard a howler yet that sounds just like a coyote. Then again, we're talking about critters that howl back to the noon whistle in town everyday.

Take care /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

SA,

The Knight and Hale EZ-Howler was one of the first calls I ever owned. I blew on that thing for a year and it sound more like mating ostriches. I gave it to my 3-year-old son to destroy (Practice with) and the first time he blew on it, I thought I had never heard a prettier howl. I STILL CAN”T GET IT TO WORK. It’s one of those if it works for you calls.

I have most of the calls listed so far in this post, but here’s where I go out on the line in fear of being ridiculed by my fellow callers. The by far easiest howler hands down, takes no effort, and sounds pretty darn impressive is the Howlin’ Critter model WW067-P by WoodsWise Products. It doesn’t matter when I pick it up or how far out of practice I am. I just pick it up and it howls. I’m not saying it’s the best or the loudest (definitely not) on the market just one of the easiest to use.

Probably didn’t need to post, but figured what the heck I’m falling behind here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Alaskan Yoter,
Do you know of a website where we could see a photo of that Woodswise howler? You bring out a good point in your above post--If it ain't broke then don't fix it.

Curt,
You are a coyote killing fool. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Keep up the good work.

No! Rich I sure can't. Thier web page went down a few years ago and I haven't been abel to find it since. If I come across anyone with a dig. camera I'll take a picture of the one I have.

Good calling to you,
Todd

I had been using the "open" reed call for a few years, when I began corresponding with Gerry Blair in Flag Staff and he was telling me how well he liked the Talley-Ho call. So he set me up with one and man, did I ever have a hard time getting that call to work for me.
So I dropped it and keep on using the Critter Call and Bill Austins call and they are very easy for me to use.

i just got a k and hale and with some practice got it to sound pretty close to a yote if you press it just right with you lips and diafram, this puppy is plenty loud maybe to loud ,how is your howling going with it?

go to varmit al's web page,go to [my calls ] and down load the calls there and with may k-h i got close to his chalenge bark ,put some filling to it and you will see,,practice ,pracice.......

I used my K&h howler for parts. I got a decent open reed that way. The Lohman is made similarly but much easier to work. I've heard and used the primos howler like it. It has a good sound and easy to use as well.

For puppy yelps and wines a single reed turkey diaphragm works real well. Jimmie

I currently use a k&h howler and it works great. Last season I made confersation with a coyote for a solid 15-20 minutes with the thing, resulting in no shots. I believe howlers are ( in general) hard to use but get fairly fun to use once you have adapted to it. Seann

Man I wish I had seen this thread a little earlier.I use the knight &hale howler and I think if you pull it apart and use it as an open reed call it does a wonderful job.with a little practice you can really make it talk.
