Knock Around Predator Rifle?

My favorite "knock around" predator rifle is a well used Ruger "Hawkeye" stainless synthetic in .223

Nothing at all special about it in any regard and by many's standards may even be looked down upon to a certain degree:) It wears a Tasco "World Class" 3X9X40 with mill-dot reticle and "Butler Creek" flip up covers. The scope and barrel have cloth camo tape on them as well. I shoot a handload using a Sierra 69 gr. Match King bullet and have killed several South Louisiana and Central Alabama coyotes and bobcat using this combination. It's certainly not high tech by any stretch of the imagination, but it has proven itself to be a pretty good "knock around" rifle nonetheless.

I have a Savage LE1 in 223 that is my knock around. It is ugly as can be but will it shoot !!!! I have a Weaver Grand Slam scope on it and neither have let me down.

My knock around is a Rem. 700 SPS Buck master SYN. camo stock in .243 Win.sporting a Bushnell 3200 Elite scope.

My beater is a encore with a Bullberry 20" 17 mach IV barrel topped off with 12x fixed power Leupold scope. It's very accurate with 17 grn bullets traveling around 4200 fps.It has had a little work done to it, namely a Mike Bellem 2x hinge pin and a trigger job .

I just got mine this summer, a 200 Stevens in 22-250. So far it shoots great using the cheap 55 grain MidSouth varmint extreme bullets. Under an inch, definitely minute of coyote. Although I might paint it white for my snow gun.

old weatherby vanguard in 223, tasco 6 power. camo paint job
does its part when I do mine, I do tend to sufffer from the
fever on the first few of the season though.

Here's one of my favorite go to rifles for a very long time. I bought this little Savage 99 in 250-3000 new in the early 70's. Great little predator/deer rifle.

My absolute favorite day time calling rifle is an 18" barreled 223 mini mauser with an old el paso made steel tubed weaver k6. Compact, lightweight, plenty accurate-plenty and most of all dependable.

Night calling I take either my 870 supermag, the H&R 10 gauge or the BPS 10 gauge.

Doc, I shoot the same gun in .243. It was my first deer rifle in about 1981 and have since turned it into my coyote gun. Does the job.

I've got a 99 in .243, actually belongs to my mom. It's been locked in my cabinet for over a decade and hasn't been touched. I'm taking a new hunter out this year so I pulled it out to scope and sight it in last week.

1 really nice shooting rifle. REALLY nice shooter.

Mine is an old Rem. 788 I had rebarreled to a 17Rem. I bought it used and it was chambered in .223. Boy was that gun a nasty mess..... big gouge marks in the stock, pitted barrel inside and out, but it shot great.

While the action was off being rebarreled, I got real aggressive with an electric sander. The stock now weights about a 1/3 of what it did and while the picture doesn't show it, the stock now sports a little schnabeled forend.
H322 and Genco 25gr. bullets is what it likes.

Guys I hope you're not using those Savage 99's as "knock around" guns?! WAY to nice to be throwing behind the seat of any pickup!!

Ducksoup- I was thinking the exact same thing!

I'll trade my "knock around" Stevens 200 for anyone's "knock around" Model 99. Especially a 99F in .308. They're no good for anything 'cept a beater anyway

my old rem 660 in 222rem with a leopold scope. This gun has killed alot of everything and never lets me down.

My knock around is a Marlin 917V. Shot a coyote with it. Worked. Enough of that subject. It took a mile ride down the road one night after hunting. On top of the car. It fell off doing 40mph. BOunced off the blacktop a few times. Got a slight crack in the forearm of the stock and ground off a bunch of metal from the muzzle. The crown was untouched though and it still shoots great!

I think that qualifies it as a "knock-around rifle"

I got a deal on a stevens 200 in .22-250 in january this year with the intent of it being a truck gun. It has now replaced my savage model 12FV that was my varmint/predator rifle. After i gave it a krylon paint job , adjusted the trigger down around 3lbs , and put a nikon buckmasters 3-9X40 scope on it. Its now my main predator rifle. Its reliable, light weight, and accurate Im not gonna say it will shoot 1/4" groups all day long but im very impressed with it for the money spent.

My beater is a Kimber 84M 243 that wears a Leupold 3.5X10. It don't shoot 1/4 inch all day long but it will put 5 shots under an inch. This is good when you consider the light profile of the sporter weight barrel these Kimbers come with Grizz.

I think that Adam (huntnfish) won hands down a truly defined "knock around" rifle. But these all sound like good throw across the creek first rifles before you hop over yourself- we all have a few of them.
