would a 223 be enough to take down feral hogs that are weighing tween 100 and 300lbs, if so whats you guys recomendations on loads. Id shoot them in the head if I had to but i want to know about a vital area shot
I went on a pig hunt in SC and the guide used a 22-250 with 55 grain throphy bonded bear claws and he killed 30 pigs a year with that set-up, but he only took head shots inside of 75 yds. Having said that I would still recommend a bigger gun if you have one. If you don't have anything bigger to use you can do it, but be very careful with your shot selection.(Standing headshots) A WOUNDED HOG IS NOT TO BE MESSED WITH. I killed two smaller hogs last year with my 7mm with a 160 grn bullet and that worked very well for me. If there is a way that you can arrange it get a larger caliber gun with a good bullet, you will be much better off in the end.
p.s. if you see a 300 pounder you will wish you would have brought a rocket launcher with you.
well here in belmont county ohio they had some wild hogs get loose on a game reserve and now there everywhere. they shot one this deer season about half mile from my house that weighted 351 on hoof.
i have killed hundreds of hog and shot them with everything from 222 rem to 338 win mag. from what i have seen is that if you hit him behind the ear the show is over, even with a 50gr. varmint bullet as for the vitals it doesnt matter what you hit them with they will run. the hog shot with the 06 didnt have a heart or lungs left and still ran. as for the 223 i had one suck up 11 55gr hps while chasing him with a truck before he went down
When it comes to hogs, bigger is better. If the .223 is all you have head shots from the side around the ear, preferably right behind the ear and just a hair lower. That is the brain cavity on a hog. The vitals on a hog are between it's shoulders and forward into the lower neck.
Shoulder shots with the .223 to a big hog could wind up get a hacked off hog hunting you.
I use a .308 w/ 150 gr jsp and nothing smaller. When intentionaly hunting hogs. Don't get me wrong thousands of hogs die every year because of the .223. Just remember: SHOT PLACEMENT< SHOT PLACEMENT< SHOT PLACEMENT
I have harvest many pigs with at .223, but like the others all in the cranium. If you are chasing hogs exclusively, nothing beats the ole' .45-70, but if you are chasing varmints and thinking about the chance of seeing one, dont worry and just go for the brain.
what would be the best bullet thought guys, would i need a lead point, balistic tip, hollow point. right now im shooting 52gr black hills hollow points. these things are fast but their also light. i even have some steel jackets. everyone says that these hogs have very tough skin.
Jacketed soft point,55 grains or bigger. A hogs is dense enough to cause full mushroom of this type bullet. Don't expect a blood trail if your hog runs. There's just not enough entry wound to let much blood escape from the thick layer of fatty tissue.
I haven't tried the 17 but the guy I buy my guns from took a 457 pound hog with his 204 savage. I'm not sure on the distance I think it was a little over 100 yards.
