Kroil And Rust In Bore??

Bad Dawg

Here's the deal. I have a CZ 527 Varmint in .17 Hornet. Had it less than a year. Maybe have 150 rounds through it. The bore is always cleaned after shooting. I was using Hoppes bore cleaner and oil in the bore, but stumbled upon Wipe Out and Kroil.

A week ago I received the Wipe Out Accelerator, Wipe Out Patch Out and Kroil in the mail and decided to clean the rifle. Wet patched the Accelerator thru first. Let sit a couple minutes then wet patched the Patch Out thru. Let sit for a minute then dry patched it a few times. Then took a patch and soaked it with Kroil and put that thru and followed with one dry patch. Complete.

Today I was sitting around and wanted to make sure I got all the copper fouling out last time so I started on the same process as before. First patch with Accelerator on it came back as shown in the pic.

Anyone know if this is rust? It looks like it. No humidity here. My house is dry. Guns are not stored in basement. Should I follow up with Hoppes Oil after running Kroil thru? Or should I just drop the Kroil completely and stick to Hoppes oil? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Kroil is a very thin oil made to be a penetrating oil, not a preservative, it works great to get lead fowling out, plastic wad fowling, and heavy carbon fowling by creeping between it and the barrel metal. I use a lot of it for those purposes, never as a rust preventative.

It could be or just residue that the Kroil lifted while sitting. I'd use a rust preservative after I finish cleaning.

Myself, if I'm not going to shoot the rifle for a few weeks or more, I run two wet patches of Corrosion-X, let set a few minutes, then one dry patch. Never ever had any problem of any kind. I'm a huge believer in Corrosion-X for gun cleaning. That's just me.

I use corrosion-x also for a preservative and on the outside when duck hunting on the salt marshes, it is one of the better ones.

on the back of the bottle of wipeout it says *contains powerful anti-corrosives that make it unnecessary to put oil in the bore*

i been using wipeout for several years now. i have never used anything after cleaning with the wipeout and never had a problem with any kind of rust.

Yeah, I am going to try some as well. Just a heads up, I guess people have been having issues with Froglube. From what it sounds like it's fine for the bore but if it gets into the firing pin housing it can freeze it up. It is also known to freeze up any other mechanical/moving parts.

Yep, it sure does. Thanks for pointing that out!

What you see is the color of Kroil residue left behind in the bore. Great stuff for cleaning, but certainly not a rust preventative. A rust and lubricity study done with a number of products indicated Hornady One Shot won on both counts.

I can't locate it at the moment, very interesting results. Kroil for getting under the copper fouling, a proven rust inhibitor in the bore and an exterior wipe down for longer periods of storage.

It's one of two things. I'm either getting flash rust in the bore from the Accelerator or it is powder residue that I haven't completely got out. I patched it again starring with Accelerator and same thing, rust color on the patch. Then ran Wipe Out Patch Out and got a little. By the third pass nothing. Patch was white.

I finilazed the process by running a wet patch with CLP on it and let it sit. I'll run a dry patch in the morning.

For long storage, I paint both sides of a patch with RIG and push it through the barrel. Then all the outside metal surfaces get wiped down with it. Short term is just hoppes no9 followed by a dry patch and back in the safe with 2 golden rods.

Here's the article you are referring to. The two videos are in the article......
