I've never killed one, but have seen a couple when I lived in Sierra Vista Arizona. (I was too young to hunt then.) They are really unique cool-looking critters. Would love to have one and get it mounted.

I've seen 'em but I've never got a shot on one. I'll be changing that here very shortly though. Pretty cool little critter. I always thought they looked like a cross between a possum and a raccoon.

I called one in last Thanksgiving just South of Safford. I didn't know what the [beeep] it was so I didn't shoot it.

AZ does not allow people to have Coati's as pets, but there is a hunting season on them with a bag limit of 1 per calendar year, season dates are Sept 1, 2012 to Mar 31, 2013 (Commission Order 14 Other Birds and Mammals). All that is needed is an AZ hunting license and there is no check in requirement.

The only one I have ever seen in the wild was while hunting Coues deer down south. Came strolling up while I had my eyes glued to a spotting scope and scared the "you know what" out of me. We stared at one another for a few seconds and he/she waltzed off.

Is there a hunting season on Coatimundi in Texas and New Mexico or is Arizona the only state they can be hunted in the USA? Anybody know?

Saw a couple hop the road in front of the truck early one morning while on a buddy's deer hunt down by Benson a few years back. Thought I had been on the sauce a little to hard at first, but then remembered what they were. Then about three years ago saw one while fishing in Clear Creek Canyon above Camp Verde.

Ya know....I thought I saw something like this in Florida once. I had heard of them but thought they came from Mexico and Central America. The specimen I saw had a massive cockroach in it's mouth, but it might have been an escaped pet, not sure. I was shaken at the time, because I had set down behind a fallen log in preparation of deer hunting once the sun lifted, and had almost lost my scalp (and possibly eyes) to an owl that thought my wool cap was a rabbit or something. I did not even hear the owl, more FELT it, looked up after ducking, and saw talons. He/she landed in a tree nearby, sucker was 3 feet tall, looked like a horned owl, and it was huge. Gave me the ugly eye but I left the cap off after that. The little critter came out a few minutes later, after the owl had gone to scare the chit out of somebody else someplace. That was in Central Florida, temp was about 65 that morning, got well into the high 80's that day though...

If what I saw was NOT this, what might it have been? It had the long ringed tail, and was NOT a raccoon for sure. It looked like this critter you pictured above.

rigtails are mostly nocturnal in all the years i have night hunted i have only seen about five and i shot one they are cool but way smaller than the coati.their eyes look like bobcat eyes at night only closer together and they are always in the rocks when i have seen them.you would be way lucky to see one during the day.
