Hi tim I am from central Ky. Ya, I know your not supposed to hunt them in ky at night with a light. The only thinkg that is supposed to be hunting at night with a light with a light is frogs, fish & coons. However, they are getting so thick around here peopls goats, chickens, etc are being attacked. It is getting prettty bad. However I would like to see a game warden tell me my father or my uncle we cannot protect our livestock!! They may fine us but not before the get an ear full and unless they put us in jail we are going to keep doing it until will kill as many of those BAS***** as we can. I hate pochers myself but we are not going to set snares in fear of catching peoples pets. They are very willy creatures and have only seen 2 during daylight hours, one of those is no longer with us. The other we didnt have a rifle!!

Tim thanks for the info though, How long have u been hunting yotes??? Any suggestions on how to gettem to come in during the day? Deer in the past have proven hard to take in the past, but these yotes make them look silly.

Thanks again for the info Tim. Hope to hear from u again soon.

From the KYDNR website....

No person may deliberately cast the rays of a spotlight or other artificial light into any field, pasture, woodlands or forest, whether public or private, where wildlife or domestic livestock may reasonably be expected to be located. Shining artificial lights into private residences or other structures is also prohibited. This does not apply to: the rays of headlights of vehicles engaged in a normal course of travel; lights being used in legitimate agricultural activities; to anyone involved in activities legitimate to his business or occupation; circumstances including lawful hunting activities; or any landowner, his immediate family or any paid employee while working on his land at that time. No person shall take wildlife, except raccoons, opossums, fishes and frogs, with lights or other means designed to blind wildlife or make wildlife visible at night. (KRS 150.395, 360)

I had to look that up to believe it myself, sounds silly that they don't let you coyote hunt with lights. I guess they are trying to keep the poaching deer to a minimum? Seems stupid to me. I'd call a DNR officer if I were you and tell him what I wanted to do... in Indiana you can kill them by any means if you are the property owner or have hand written permission on you. That means year round with rifles, shotguns, traps WHATEVER.

I'd guess that you could do the same thing since they are a nuisence to you. I wouldn't get too excited about poaching them if they still fight you on it... they'll just keep swinging by and taking your rifles and trucks until you give up. Also, the neighbors pets probably shouldn't be allowed to roam around in the livestock either should they? I don't allow it around here... dogs can be more devious to livestock than coyotes ever thought about... coyotes kill, they don't play! Playing is more dangerous a lot of times. I'd snare em' and hunt em'.

I know a guy who caught a coyote in a snare while he was calling on a field... heard it screaming in the fence line and ran over there. Either in its approach or exit it got snared... pretty cool! Kinda like a plan B, if you miss... just wait for it... wait for it... WHAM SNARED! haha.

Hey JRB that is silly isent it You got that from the KY fish and wildlife website huh.

It is silly. No doubt

But you are right it would suck to lose guns etc. Wont take vehicle unless u shoot from it or 4 wheeler. I have researched it and even spoke to my local warden about it. We know each other well, however being illeagal he is aware of situation. I think he would be somewhat sympathatic considering. However, if I were caught it is the law and would not make him feel obligated to lets say give a buddy a break. I would suffer the consequences and continue on.

About the deer. You are right about 10 or 15 years ago u could spotlight but the deer population dwindled bad. There are thick now.
however after stoping it. However like I said b4 the law is the law. SO if i get caught so be it. If you cant afford to pay dont play!!!!

But I will not stand to see more and more livestock being attacked!!!!

I agree 100% wild dogs do a lot of damage. But these aint dogs or pets it wasnt doing it. My nieghbors pets dont roam on my property generally but I wouldnt take the chance on making them made becaseu I snared lasey, however. Now on the other hand however, if I saw lacey chassing my live stock then shame on him if I am good enough shot to hit him.

My father was visting the other day and acutuall seen our horses chasing 2 yotes from there pasture. Ever seen this b4, or anyting like it?

Yeah, I've heard lammas and donkeys are real wicked on coyotes and dogs... they will chase em' as far as they can! Fight em' tooth and nail supposedly, doesn't surpise me to hear that of horses too. I've seen cattle do it on hunting videos and stuff, they all know a predator when they see one!

KyCoyoteHunter,
I feel your pain, but we have a strict policy here at Predator Masters concerning illegal activity. We will not condone the pursuit of animals by any sort of method that is prohibited by law.

Yeah, there has to be a better way... surely there is something writen up for landowners to maintain their own property? I'd check with DNR about that one again.

KyCoyoteHunter,
Our policy goes a bit beyond "we do not condone". We also report this sort of activity to proper law enforcement authorities, which is why I am glad that you have not posted anything concerning actual spot lighting of coyotes. I am doing my best to keep you out of trouble here.

Our laws on spotlighting here in Iowa are very similar to your own. I wish it wasn't so, because coyotes are a lot braver in the dark. They are very light shy though, and a lot of coyotes get spooky by people shining lights around without knowing proper methods. I have learned that night vision gear is legal here in Iowa, which would allow me to see the coyotes when I called them but I still would not be able to see them in my scope. Now if they would only make the use of lazer sights legal------ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well Rick I do appreciate it. Get u a night vision scope!!! Those are high, humm. Anyway thanks for the warning about alerting the authorities!!!!!!

jrbhunter,
You are probably correct on the livestock protection thing. We have a law like that in Iowa, but the offending livestock killers must be caught in the act.

Ky,
I think you could call those coyotes with a howler. Early morning seems best time, with late evening being second best time. If you would like an instructional cassette on howling, just send me your mailing address. [url=mailto:cronkcalls@aol.com

About the donkeys chasing coyotes. My uncle has a couple that roam with his cattle and I have watched them herd the calves like they were their own kind to protect them. Funny story: My brother-in-law and I were deer hunting on his farm one day and he had his dog box in back of his truck. He is a big coon hunter. We come back to the truck and the donkeys have kicked in the side of his truck around the bed and tailgate area trying to get at the dog smell in the box. I thought it quite humorous, he didn't! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif My uncle said they will chase any dog that steps foot into the pasture.

Ky, under certain circumstances you can get a permit from the state if indeed you are having livestock problems. There are certain regs that go along with this permit. It must be done from a stationary blind and your local warden notified each time an attempt is made. He should have known this and told you about it.

But there must be proof that it is actually coyote's and not the neighborhood dogs!!Coyote and dog kills are distinctly diferent and can be told apart.

Daylight hunting is more than possible. If indeed you are having stock problems they are denning within one mile of your pastures. You are also talking about an older more experienced pair of adults. The sign will tell you which direction they are coming from. Find a good location near where they might be denning and use either the howler or a coyote pups tape. This will get them within range for the gun.Be sure there is no way they can aproach from your backside, call into the wind. An open field at your back is the best way to keep them in front of you that I know of.

Hunting such animals in the timber is possible but it takes two men to do it right. Jimmie

Man that is crazy they are so harsh on you guys in Kentucky... never thought of them as a big animal hugging state. We have laxed laws that allow landowners to take care of their own property and still have an overabundance of deer and coyotes!

KY, to get private messages you click on the button up top that says MY PROFILE. You will find several there... all this time I thougth we had been bouncing PM's back and forth and its been a once sided conversation this whole time! LOL!
