Ladder testing

When you run a ladder test what are you guys looking for? I loaded up 10 bullets in .2 gr. increments and plan on shooting this weekend. Iv never ran the ladder test.

Best results are obtained by shooting your ladder strings at 300 yards if possible.

You will usually find several shots within the ladder that tend to group closer together than the rest. Sometimes there will be more than one node which shows promise. Generally, the middle load in a node is the most promising load. I like to shoot over a chronograph and, as a rule, the shots that tend to group best in the string will show the least variation in velocity from one charge to the next. By selecting the middle charge, you will more than likely be able to use thrown charges to good advantage.

whats the reasoning behind shooting at the longer ranges? i have always loaded 3 rounds at each grain increment and which group was the best i started working up and down from that .2 gr. until i found the best charge. Just wanting to try something new that will maybe help same a few of them expensive Barnes bullets.

i usually load in .5gr increments and test them at 200 yards. i also load 5 of each load and test them. i can usually find a good load from that then i usually go +- .2gr and see if that gets better.

That's the beauty of the ladder method. First step is to load only one round @ each increment to find your accuracy nodes. Once that is determined you can increase the number of rounds per group. For a very helpful explanation see:

I quit doing Ladder test. I started doing the OCW method. I go 7% under max and depending on the Caliber I go up in either .2 or .4 Gr increments.
I load ten shells at each increment and shoot two five shot groups.
The reason I shoot two groups is that sometimes you might have a bad group with the first five and then a better with then next five. For me it is just a way of weeding out the bad for the good.
