Laptop computer?

Quick question guys, I'm toying around with the idea of buying a laptop computer but I have no idea what to look for. Basically, it would just be used for surfing the web and maybe a few other basic tasks but nothing fancy. I really don't even need one but I have a really hard time sitting at the computer desk[bad back]. What should I look for and what can I expect to pay. Thanks, Duck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Got some time to waste doing research?

Go to www.newegg.com and look at their laptops. Read the reviews & look at the specifications. That will give you some idea where to start.

Also...would a wireless keyboard and mouse be of any benefit? I know a lot of guys that sit in recliners with the keyboard on their lap and the computer hooked up to the TV.

Just a thought... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I just ordered a laptop from Dell for my Mother
im not much for name brand, i usually build my desktops, but after having 3 i can vouch for Dell.
I got it for her because she does about the same. some online shopping, bill paying, and of course her favorite, solitare and Mayjong(sp?)
Im payin right around $650, not bad really.

I will NEVER purchase another dell anything. When my daughter started her college education, we purchased her a nice new dell laptop to the tune of $1700+. Well, it worked just fine at the initial bootup and we left her at college 500 miles away. Three days later, the dell crashed for an unknown reason. She called dell about the problem and they said that they were going to call her back in four hours, but they didn't specify the year or century that they would call her back. So, I got to make a four hour long distance phone call to my daughter to get her computer running. I called the "support" people at dell and got brushed off. A letter to mr. dell himself went unanswered.

Fast forward a bit. Some of my daughters friends had similar dell laptops. They all ate the hard drive and battery within a two week timespan. Coincidence? I think not. As I understand it, dell has outsourced their (lack of)support to India. That should make things real interesting for dell buyers. MI VHNTR

I bought a used Dell Inspiron 8200 at the local pawn shop for $200, took it immediately to the local computer shop to have it formatted and the Windows XP Pro re-installed with a couple of free anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall programs installed, total cost for the laptop up and running like a top...= $270.00

It's not one that I use everyday, but when I was confined to bed, or go to a motel, it's really convenient and I don't worry about viruses, etc., getting into my home computer.

My first desktop was a dell. I had a bunch of problems with it from the start but the customer service was ok /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif. I bought another one and that thing didnt work right from day one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif. I sent it back three times in less than five months. On the last time I told them to just keep it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif. My mom bought an HP about two years ago and hasnt had one problem with it. I bought a HP laptop last year and had a minor problem with it. Called customer service and was shocked to hear an american voice /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. Unusual becuase I was used to talking to an indian dell worker. I sent it and four days later it returned good as new /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif.
