guy's i have a project .45 cal smokeless muzzleloader that i built and designed a breechplug which excepts a 45acp case.i'm looking for the hottest lrp available to make the 1 1/4" jump to get to the powder.i have been testing with the win lrm's and was wondering if anyone knows if there is a hotter one out there.vv n110,n120 work great but i'm having trouble with imr-4198(hang fire's).thank's

Dave,
Federal 215M is probably the hottest off the shelf primer available. Igniting smokeless reliably with that kind of jump might be a problem.
Good luck!

Hotter may not be better...in some ML applications it has even been proven to be counter productive.

Case in point is using 209 shotshell primers....some have noted that the charge actually gets moved down the barrel a little way before igniting. Not good in those cases.

Some aftermarket concepts for using primers in some sort of sleeve, be it a .25 cal case trimmed in length or other steel sleeves are recommending the use of small pistol or rifle primers.

Example is this ad from Cabela's:

VariFlame™ Primer Adapter
Every muzzleloader shooter knows the importance of finding just the right combination of propellant, projectile and ignition to achieve maximum efficiency and accuracy from their firearm. The Vari-Flame Adapter adds the option of using small pistol or small rifle centerfire primers in place of a standard 209 shotshell primer. In some firearms the use of these primers can result in significantly reduced fouling and greater accuracy. The VariFlame Adapter looks like a 209 shotshell primer with a receiver area machined out to accept centerfire primers, and fits in the 209 breech plug receiver of all muzzleloaders that accept 209 ignition. The kit includes 10 all-brass, reusable VariFlame Adapters, a depriming base and a capping/decapping tool with handle. Use small rifle or small pistol primers only. Primers sold separately. Replacement Primer Adapters are available Per 10.

bea175,thank's for the info that's a bummer i was hoping there was a hotter one.

tcman, thank's for your info too.i do have the vari-flame but this perticular project this is not a option.when shooting black powder sub's it will help but when shooting smokeless powder in a muzzleloader ignition is much harder because of the distance from flame to powder.i have some cases which are milled out for 209's and alway's give positive ignition(shot shell primers) it's just alot easier to use the acp case with the lrp.right now if i stick with the vv powders i will probably be alright but it's not 20 degrees right now so the true test will be this winter.i was hoping there was a hotter primer but i guess not.i will have to scratch the 4198.

Probably any will do. I once fired some primed 45-70 cases in my trapdoor so that I could decap them without worry that they would go off. Don't remember the brand, but in a lighted room they shot a flame out the end of the 32" barrel. They will probably all do that!

longcruise,i have been using wlrm primers and they work with vv powders but don't work great with the imr-4198 powder i was using.i get hangfires.now i'm not being 100% fare because i am using barnes xpanders and they are loose fitting.i will try a tighter fitting projectile the next time out.the 209's will ignite with any situation but like i said i would like to stay with the lrp.thank's for your reply.

You will get a bit hotter going to the Federal LR mag primers. The BPC shooters have pretty much established that.

Have you tried AA 5744?

longcruise,5744 will work fine but i'm looking to push the bullet i'm using a little faster then 5744 will give me before it blows sabot's.i will have to pick up some feds and try them.thank's again
