Laser for marking kill at night

I night hunt alone most of the time and finding downed animals after leaving the truck can be a PITA. I have heard some guys use a laser pointer clamped to the shooting rest or chair to mark kills so it’s easier to find the animal after leaving the truck. Does anyone have any suggestions? How powerful does the laser have to be? How well does it work? What are the drawbacks?

I took a piece of picatinny. . . .drill and tapped it, hooked it up to a cheap tri pod and use a laser max. Works like a charm, no draw backs. They have limits on the power you can buy, but almost any laser will do at night.

Sounds like it would be very helpful. I usually just wonder around in the dark till I find them. I will have to try that.

Fireguyty, that is a cool idea. I will try and give it a try. I have one of those Joby octopus looking tripods I'll look into mounting it too.

The laser pointer idea works pretty good. Heck, one night we lost 7 out of 12 kills in the tall grass. One drawback is that the laser beam will raise, when you get off of your truck. The truck raises slightly and the beam will be pointing 50 or more yards out than your original mark. We tried it with 3 guys on a high rack. It was WAY off.

Guys,
There is a company that makes exactly what you are looking for, and it is made for the reason you want one. My local gun store sells them. I will check with them and post the company info if you want..

Been doing this for years. I never leave home without my laser. Mines attached to a length of sectional flex tube thats used to direct coolant in machine tool applicaitions. This flex tube can be adjusted with ease and holds it's position. I do alot of hunting by my lonesome and the laser is a big advantage when it comes to locaiting dead vermin. Grizz

Whiteknuckle, I would like the company info if you can find it.

Tony, I had thought about that too. Hadn't come up with a solution yet.

Grizzlyone, that is a neat idea. The tripod I have is kinda like the flex tube conduit. It should wrap around the roof rack or chair securely.

If you don't find your critter while walking from the laser to the "spot", just walk from the "spot" straight back to the laser. If you aimed the laser pointer correctly to the fallen critter, it will be on that "line". We expect our retrievers to take a straight line to a fallen bird, we should be at least as good at holding a straight line to a mark , as a dog

Whiteknuckle, what do you think the realworld max effective range of the Shot Spot-r is? 200y? How difficult is the dot to spot at that distance? Is it a couple inches in dia or a foot or so?

Strow, I have not used this device yet, but even the cheapest laser pointers will shine a few hundred yards. I have been about 150 yards away from a laser pointer before and the dot was only about 2 inches in diameter. Like I said though i do not have any experience with the Shot-Spot-R yet.

I just came across this thread and find it funny that you are talking about marking your downed animal while in the truck and that the laser would raise when you got out. That would mean you shot it out of a vehicle. Most states don't allow this. Nice hunting practices.

Some do. Nothing wrong with that.
Lots of guys on here hunt from a vehicle.

Well, I don't believe these fellas were talking about hunting out of the interior of a vehicle, but rather out of a pickup bed or off of a special rack made on the vehicle for shooting off of.

These guys know the laws concerning night hunting and vehicles in their states very well.

I'm sure they appreciate your concern though.

The green lasers are MUCH better as they will tend to "glow" along their beam from the dust in the air.
Kind of like a Star Wars Jedi sword.
That's what I use & you can usually walk "beside" it to the kill.

i never thought of a laser
i take my gps and mark my spot and then draw a line on the gps in the direction of shot and estimated range make a few points takes like 2 mins so then i just follow gps to the kill havent lost one yet doing do
