I had an upper sitting in my safe that was a 16” 204 Ruger. It shot really well but I was never happy with the velocity I would get. I figured I could get the same velocity out of a 223 and for a lot less money. So I finally ordered a barrel last week. I received it yesterday and took it out to my shop and pulled the old barrel and slapped this new one together. Today I grabbed a mag of ammo from my night rig. I had only planned to get the scope zeroed and shoot a few groups. The ammo I used was some reloads of 50gr vmax and some ramshot. The barrel is a 18” 1-8 twist Wilson arms government profile barrel. I was pretty surprised at how well it shot. Rounds 12-15 for a 5 shot group. This is my 3rd Wilson barrel (not Wilson combat) and they all shoot like this. And they are pretty well priced about $220 shipped.

I’m all done with this rifle. She is where I want her at. My average velocity for this load is 3456 with a 50gr vmax. This seems smoking for an 18” barrel. It’s extremely accurate this barrel has shot everything I’ve put through it. This pic is a 10 shot string no cooling just shooting. This is mixed head stamped brass that processed. Some had primer crimps some not. I sized trimmed chamfered deburred and ground the crimps on the primer pockets. I do not like working with range brass there are a lot of steps to get to the finish line. But I had good results with this stuff. The green dot is 1 inch. The flyer was somewhere in the middle of the string. I wish I could have found that pice of brass to determine what it was. Because I don’t pull shots I’m perfect:)

My next project because I’m a glutton for punishment is a 24” bear creek arsenal 243. I have the upper waiting for the lower to show up. I have a rise armament 3lb trigger and a mft extreme duty minimalist stock and an ergo deluxe grip for it. I’m not sure why I went this route. Probably cause I’m poor and a tight azz. But if it don’t shoot like I want it too I’ll buy another barrel for it and I’ll have all the parts for it to swap it out. I like to piece things like this together and make them work I find it satisfying. I also like to show up to a tournament in my rag tag hunting clothes and my cheap 384 thermals and beat the pants off the guys with the fancy stuff. I’m going to name this rifle the PSYCHO BILLY CADILLAC. It seems fitting for this one:)

I have a couple hunting buddies with BC uppers. One in .223 and one .243. Both are tac drivers, so I bought a BC 6mm arc upper. Results were the same.

Received my lower yesterday. This thing is all bca upper and lower. I swapped the trigger for a rise armament the grip to an ergo deluxe the stock to a MFT minimalist extreme duty. Put a arca plate on it and my good old Jackie Bushman Nikon scope 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂. Took it to the range got it on paper and shot a 4 shot group with some ammo from one of my other 243’s 108eldm. I’m very impressed I honestly thought I’d be sending it back with all the negative talk about them. My whole intentions here was to have all the parts and order a barrel of it wouldn’t shoot but I’m thinking I’ll keep. I have an adjustment gas block ordered and a trigger tech diamond 1.5lb trigger on the way. I tried four different bullets out of this rifle. First was my 108 then I had some old 100gr hornady interloks and some 80gr bergers and some 58gr vmaxes. The 58’s shot pretty well i was mildly impressed with them as well they will shoot with a tailored load for the rifle. The 80’s looked like Ray Charles was aiming for Stephen Hawking.

Did some load development for the PBC rifle. The pic with two groups is 80gr eld vt loaded with Winchester stabal 6.5 on the left and on the right is 58gr vmax loaded with cfe223 other pic is 55gr nosler bt loaded with cfe223. I was originally dead set on using the 55’s but after looking at the cost of them vs the 58’s I’m going to run the 58’s. Not sure the velocity on the 58’s or the 80eld vt. I did chrono the 55’s and the average was 3831 for 5 shots. I wanna say my low was 3818 and the high was 3845. Im very pleased with this rifle for how well it shoots the broad range of bulllets and powders it likes the price is outstanding. I have three full custom Remington 700’s two with bartlien barrels and one with a criterion and two of those rifles took some work the other shoots just about everything. One of those rifles has had a multitude of different barrels over the years. Brux Douglas pac nor Lilja and now a bartlien. They all shot good but some took more work than the others. It’s pretty fun when you get one that cooperates right out of the gate.

How does the barrel cleanup? My BCA SS 18" 223 Wyde cleans very easy, bore scope shows very minor tool marks. It also shoots well with several different brand bullets.

I ran about 15 patches dipped in hoppes wrapped around a brass brush through it. I’d push one through it and wait a couple hours and they started coming clean after 15 patches. I don’t have a bore scope so I’m not sure if I got it back to new or not. I’m shooting cfe223 through it and that is supposed to remove the copper but I have no idea if it’s working. It did take about 8-10 rounds to get my groups back after cleaning.

I use Pro-shot copper cleaner IV ( non-ammonia based). Put on a swab, wait 30 min then patch it out. Follow up with Hoppes and then some oil. First tried it on a 9mm shiny case. 30 min and case was etched. Doesn't hurt steel!

Perfect I’ll give it a try!!!

You can repeat if you want to remove all fouling, but I am of the opinion that there is such a thing as beneficial fouling, especially in a rough factory barrel such as this.

This was same barrel with somewhere around 100 rounds through it to smooth out some of the rough spots. Fired 7 or 8 rounds through it and did 6-7 strokes w/wet patch on Iosso brush and then dry patch after 4 hours. Tactical Advantage works well on both copper and carbon.

The Iosso brushes are very stiff nylon so tend make for tight fit. I clean after every outing before putting the rifle(s) away so no severe fouling. Might take a couple of applications on a badly fouled bore as indicated on first post. TA is one of the best solvents I've used over the years, even compared to amonia based solvents and it does no harm to leave overnight, in fact they say you can leave it in the bore after cleaning. I always run a preservative through mine as it may be a while between outings.

That’s good info thank you!!
