I just returned from Africa and had the best trip ever. In addition to great antelope hunting, I took one Leopard over his kill and called and killed another. It was the end of the year and the PH had 2 permits left over.
He also had a Lion permit so we hunted for 2 days. The first day we tracked 3 lions on foot but the male ditched us and we had a close call with two females at 20 yards.
That afternoon we set up a blind in another area and I called about 2 hours until dark. At dark we radioed the truck to pick us up and they were frantic. They couldn't reach us and a pride of lions walked 20 yards past the truck and went towards our blind. They came from the direction we did not expect, caught our wind, and locked up. The PH and I didn't see them from our location but they were only 200 yds away. Had we kept the radio on I might have Leo in the salt. When we turned the truck around we could see them in the headlights.
The next day was a dust storm and the lions didn't respond even though we had located some by their tracks going in; but not out of some bush.
Location was the Namib Desert, Namibia, PH was Keith Wright of Didimala Safaris.
He is now a believer (and well schooled) in calling!
