I got a call from a friend of mine that knows I have been trying to learn how to predator hunt. This friend has some pretty good calling land that I had forgotten all about. Anyway he told me that he had some calves that had chewed up tales and that he did lose one calf to coyotes last week. We got set up saturday morning just before daylight. I positioned him overlooking the entire field where I thought coyotes would come from. I started calling with my Dan Thompson w-1 after a few rounds with that I turned on my prey master rabbitt distress. It was about five minutes into the calling when I noticed the cows starting to quickly moving together. From behind me I looked and saw a grey object just sitting in the field. It took me a second to realize that this was a coyote. How it got to the middle of this field with out me seeing it coming is beyond me. It must have just popped up from the ground. Anyway I was able to shoot it, it was a young female. I shot here with my nef .223 55 grain wolf bullett, not very fur friendly. After my shot my friend was so eager to see this calf killer that I could not get him to sit still. I was going to continue to call. He jumped up and ran over to the dead coyote. While we were looking at this coyote I glanced into the field where he had been looking, there were to coyotes with the after burners on going across the field. While we were walking to the truck we spotted another coyote easing down a fence line. The lesson that I have learned is to be a little patient and continue your calling even after you shot. I'm sure that most people already know this but I just thought I would share my expierience from this past weekend, thanks Gary.
