lessons learned

I got a call from a friend of mine that knows I have been trying to learn how to predator hunt. This friend has some pretty good calling land that I had forgotten all about. Anyway he told me that he had some calves that had chewed up tales and that he did lose one calf to coyotes last week. We got set up saturday morning just before daylight. I positioned him overlooking the entire field where I thought coyotes would come from. I started calling with my Dan Thompson w-1 after a few rounds with that I turned on my prey master rabbitt distress. It was about five minutes into the calling when I noticed the cows starting to quickly moving together. From behind me I looked and saw a grey object just sitting in the field. It took me a second to realize that this was a coyote. How it got to the middle of this field with out me seeing it coming is beyond me. It must have just popped up from the ground. Anyway I was able to shoot it, it was a young female. I shot here with my nef .223 55 grain wolf bullett, not very fur friendly. After my shot my friend was so eager to see this calf killer that I could not get him to sit still. I was going to continue to call. He jumped up and ran over to the dead coyote. While we were looking at this coyote I glanced into the field where he had been looking, there were to coyotes with the after burners on going across the field. While we were walking to the truck we spotted another coyote easing down a fence line. The lesson that I have learned is to be a little patient and continue your calling even after you shot. I'm sure that most people already know this but I just thought I would share my expierience from this past weekend, thanks Gary.

gary saurage - Good story and a lesson well learned, particularly this time of year. Coyotes are joining up and running in pairs again, they are also establishing territories, multiples will be very common now.

Thanks for the advise I learned a similar lesson during deer season. I shot a doe and within 3 minutes another was headed over to the decesed to see what the problem was. I shot her too but if I have just jumped down and went to recover the meat I would have missed the other one and never known it was there.

Gary- Glad your still having some luck. As you get better, the varmits better look out! If you want to send me some pics I'll get 'em posted for you.

Yellowhammer

I'll have some pictures on there way. Thanks, I picked up some new spots that are awesome. Come see me again. The day we hunted was tough. Pick a less windy day.

Gary- I justed picked up a new place today. It's supposted to be covered up with coyotes. They are having problems with them trying to get into some goat pens. The deer lease that it backs up to is what I have been given free access to. They were tickled to have someone come in to hunt them. It's only about 30 minutes away, so I plan to check it out this week. Your welcome to come up and hunt with me. I very likely will try to come back your way first chance I get. I'll be waiting for the pics.
