Sunday was the first i could get out for coyotes. At noon the wife said she had to head to town and if I wanted to go hunting till 2:00 I could. Thank you dear! Well I was out of the house so fast I forgot my new Bat decoy, my shootin sticks and my .22mag pistol. The first 2 set-ups I called in nothing but Blue Jays and skeeters. At the third set-up I was getting hot, sleepy and really didn't think much of anything was going to head my way since it was 70+ degrees and 1:00 in the afternoon. On Friday I gave some advise to a fellow member on setting up in NY. i should have listened! I set up looking down hill INTO the wind. I could see 50 yards EXCEPT for behind me. Well one came in quietly, noticed him at 15 feet broad side. Swung on him and he turned and headed right at me (since I was on a slope we were eye to eye). At 12 feet I let go with my new .223 Model 7 with 3-9 scope (on 3x). I MISSED him at 12 feet! All I can figure is I Held low so as to not blow his nose off and more than likely shot right under his belly button. I thought I hit him but I think he was just turning himself rightside out. It sure was fun though. Lessons learned: Look into the wind. Use a shotgun in the thick stuff. Make sure you can see every direction. Expect them at anytime. They won't allways circle, sometimes they come straight at you! At least I got the miss out of the way!
