Has anyone here actually owned one of these, this is the top of the line Leupold 30mm tube, high dollar hunting scope. What did you think?

I have not owned one but I can tell you of a man that has had a lot of experience in optic's.

The gentlemen has his own gun shop and before him was his dad, so I guess about 60 yrs or so in the family.
He has sold Leupold scopes for all of these years and his remarks to me and other people were; don't waste your money on the LPS". In fact "he says that the 4.5x14 is every bit as good as the LPS".

He sells about a handful a year and thats not many considering that in Sep and Oct each year he will sell around $6,000 - $7000 of the other models.

Just get a 30mm 6.5-20 or 8.5-25 long range target scope. Much more useful and I don't think you see one hill difference in them and the price appears to be about the same.

I have some Schmidt & Benders which in my opinion are the best there is. Leupold's are about 90 to 95% of these and half the price.

I just bought the 3.5x14 mil-dot 2 months ago.Im very happy with it but it was a tough decision to make between the 4.5x14LR.It seems to gather slightly more light but thats compared to a 6.5x50LR.I call some tight places once in a while and figured the lower might come in handy. The click adjustments are right on and its easy to set 0 but you wont go wrong getting a 4.5x14LR.

I think your spot on with the Leupold 6.5-20 or the 8.5-25 long range models.I own both. VERY NICE. Awfull spendy too. I'm actually going to cheap sell the 8.5-25. It's to much magnification for me. At fullpower your eye-relief has to be perfect.
The other brand you mention. Where are they made?

Ace, that is the only drawback to the Leupolds, eyerelief can be finicky sometimes. We use them on our Sniper rifles. 6.5-20 is probably the best compromise of the two. Like the 8.5 for real long range work though.

The Schmidt and Benders are make in Germany.

I agree. the 6.5-20 is perfect. As far as varmit or predator shooting. I've never seen a finer scope. Bar none. Every one. I say again. Everyone, that looks thru my long range leupolds is amazed.
I will sell the 8.5-25 to buy another 6.5-20. This scope ROCKS! The eye relief even on 20 is more then generous.
In the Marines we used Unertal scopes on our sniper rigs back in the early 80's.Nice scope, but I still prefer the Leupold long range target.
Whats your favorite reticle ?

My favorite reticle is one that gives you reference points for trajectory. Ballistic plex, TDS etc. I would like to see an offering from Leupold someday.

I've actually been pretty impressed with the LPS scopes. They have several features I like, that I wish Leupold could deliver on their other more affordable models. Things like the 4x range, fast focus eyepiece and constant eye relief. Those are some of the things other mfg's have been delivering for years (at less than half the price...), that has been costing Leupold some business in recent years. When you see those features offered on $250 - $400 scopes, it kind of grates on you to pay for a VxIII with it's ancient decades old design. A lot of people have been buying Elite 4200's over VxIII's for exactly these features. It's nice to see Leupold getting with the program of modern scope design. And that constant eye relief is nice and long too at 4". The optical quality of the LPS is definitely quite a bit superior to the VxIII line also - they are the only scopes I've used that I thought had resolution and brightness that could give a Nightforce BR scope a run for the money. Albeit at lower magnification. Size and weight on them is very good for a 30mm side focus too.

I just wish the LPS weren't so bloody expensive. It's more than I'm willing to pay for a scope in that magnification range. But, they are pretty damn nice, if you ask me. If they made one in 5x20, for $800, I'd have a bunch of them. Of course, if my aunt had gnads she'd be my uncle too...

Ace, those Unertl's you were talking about had some interesting features but were way to big and heavy! I much prefer the Leupold longrange models as well as the Schmidt & Benders to them.

As far as ret's go, it depends on what I am using it for. I like Mil-Dots for sniper work, Std. Duplex for general hunting, fixed range ret's by Premier when using a laser for long range, and their lighted ret is not bad for non-sniper work. I generally have my scopes worked over by Premier Reticles.
