Leupold Mark 4 vs. Bushnell 4200

i have read alot of posts about the Bushnell 4200 while researching what scope to put on my Rem700 LTR .223 coyote hunting rifle. so finally i was able to get to look through this past weekend. the model if got to try was the 2.5-10, 30mm tube model with illum. reticle. i was very impressed!! the brightest scope that i have ever seen i think.

i have used the Rem700/Leupold VxIII combo for over 10 years now. it is tried and true and i hate to switch. however i am not sure that i can pay more for the leupold this time. not because of the cost but because the Bushnell just seems better (than the VXIII).

does anyone have experience with the Mark 4 line? they cost upwards of $1000 but i want to look through one before i decide to go with the Bushnell.

any opinions appreciated.

I have the 2.5X10 Bushnell 4200 on a 300WBY Mag and it is great . I have several 3X9 and 4x12 Elite 3200's on my yote
guns and deer guns . They are great as well .Love Lupolds I just can't afford them .

I have over a dozen Luppys. Love them all as they are all excellent glass. I have two 4200 scopes, and they will not be the last. Dollar of dollar they are the best scopes out there IMHO anyway. I watch ebay and craigslist all the time for them as they are often avail used for an great price. I am (alas!) at the point right now that I am pretty well set for rifles and scopes for them, but am always on the lookout for good deal, and those 4200 scopes are a Great deal!

i talked to a rep at SWFA just a minute ago.

she indicated that the Mark 4 MR/T 30mm 3x9x36mm should be above the 4200 as far as optics in concerned. after seeing the 4200 i'd have to see it to believe it even though the Mark 4 is towards the upper end of leupold's scopes.

i like the MR/T because they are compact. the gun i use is a 700 LTR 223 which is very short and the bigger scopes don't look right on the gun.

i wish someone on the board had some direct experience the the leupold MR/T series.

thanks for the responses...brad

Have used both. Mark 4's are tougher and more repeatable. Glass is comparable. Leupold has a better "eyebox" (as usual). I suggest trying to find a Mark 4 "Precision Rifleman". A few places still have them in stock. I've also seen a couple on the auction sites lately.......

My son has a 6.5-24x40mm Elite 4200. I think we paid somewhere around $400-$450 for it. I have a 4.5-14x50mm Leupold VX-III, which I paid $530 for.

The Leupold is noticeably brighter to my eyes than the Bushnell, but that might be attributable to the objective lense size difference. However, it is worth $100 more than the Bushnell? I don't know. The Leupold is a very nice product, and the fit and finish appear nicer, but that is a subjective thing. Also, the eye relief on the Leupold is listed at 3.6", while on the Bushnell, it is listed at 3.0".

OTH, I accidentally put a small scratch on my Leupold just last night, so "finish" might not mean as much to me this afternoon as it did yesterday afternoon. Not that I'm not happy with the Leupold, but knowing what I know now, I would probably buy the Bushnell, and spend the left over $100 on something else.

BTW, the Bushnell is mounted on a Savage 10FP-HS Precision in .308, and the Leupold is mounted on a Remington 700 VSF in .308.

The 4200 series are great for the money but not as good as a Leupold. The finally fixed the 1/8 min clicks to 1/4 min clicks on the 4200's. I have worked with about all the scopes that are any good and for the money the 4200 seems to be really good.

I would not spend the money on a Mark 4 optic as they are way over priced due to military sales. Leupold's are great optics and have used them for over 35 years. No way would pay that kind of money for a Mark 4 over the standard scopes. I use the 6.5-20 and 8.5-25 30mm longrange models on my hunting and work rifles. Excellent.

If you are looking for a hunting optic that does not involve longrange shooting. Would look at the 3.5-10's. I don't use anything less than 4.5-14 though.
