Leupold mark ar mod 1

I haven't been on the forum for awhile. But I have a new rifle on the way!!!!!!!! Rock River varmint 16" stainless bull barrel. I'm pumped to get it (soon I hope). But anyway I was up in the air about what scope to get. I've kinda narrowed it down to the leupold mark ar 4-12x40 BUT I noticed that the scope is offered with mil-dot or fine duplex. The fine duplex saves about 70$. Do you guys think I would regret not getting the mil-dot???? I don't really see mil-dot being nec with the turret. What ya think????

The mil-dot is not be accurate except at one power setting. With the turrets, you can dial any adjustments. I see no reason to go for the mil-dot in this case.

I like graduated reticles for faster adjustments when needed. I also prefer to hold for wind. And lastly, they can be used to range.

However, to do all that, it must be a fixed power or FFP so as to be correct at all power settings.

The only benefit would be for ranging, like others have said you will have to be at the correct magnification or learn the actual mil measurements at different powers. It does involve some math and is usually only really needed if you are shooting maybe 300 yards or more.

A bit off topic, but I also just bought a RRA Varmint with a 20" barrel. Topped with the first gen Mark AR 3x9. Absolute tack driver. You'll love it.

What bullet does your RRA varmint like the best??? I have several boxes of hornady superformance 53gr I'm hoping mine will like em as well as my other RRA does

If you plan on doing any 600 yard target shooting with it you will wish you got the mil-dot for holding for wind. If you don't plan on doing that get the standard reticle. As stated above it will have to be at max power setting.

Mine favors the 50 grain Hornady V-Max over 23.5 of Reloder10x, averaging 3115 fps. The 60s do well also. That's not to say that it didn't like others, most every shot with Hornady bullets under 75 grain are sub-moa. Tried several Barnes, most all were 1+ moa. My current 50 grain V-max load averages .548", best has been .488", and I don't consider myself a particularly skilled shooter.

I also worked with IMR8208xbr, and got great groupings, about equal to Reloder, but I went with Reloder due to less variance in fps.

I use the mil dots for moving targets (hogs mostly) and holding for wind on long range steel. More precise hold offs. If you can see your impact, you can use the mil dots for a quick measured second shot. You can use it for ranging, but with a good rangefinder I rarely use that feature.

I have the 3x9 mil-dot and could not be happier. I use the mil-dots for a few long range shots, but mostly for wind shots. The dialed in shots have been right on the money. I have this scope on my RRA 20" Predator Pursuit, and plan on getting another one for my new RRA 18" R-3 that just followed me home recently.

I pretty much have the same set up. No mil-dot 16" brushed stainless bull barrel 223 Wylde. I have yet to find a bullet that won't hit under an inch at 100 yards... as long as I do my job...
