Leupold or Mueller??

I have been searching the forums for opinions on rifle scopes (I just purchased a .223 Ruger M77 for fox/coyote) and was wondering what you all thought about the leupold VX-I 4-12X40 for this type of hunting (in upstate NY). I currently use a Leopold on a Rem. 30-06 and am happy with that. I've also read some good things on this forum about Mueller scopes, but read on another forum that they are made in China. Any opinions on this brand scope vs. Leopold? Is Leupold the better brand to go with (I'm planning on spending $250 max)? I hope I'm not opening up a can of worms here; just trying to get some good advice from seasoned predator hunters. Thanks.

I'm a big Leupold fan. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I've never owned a Mueller however. I've heard some good things about their illuminated recticle scopes. Can't go wrong with Leupold quality however. I just put a VX II 3 X 9 with a 50mm bell and heavy recticle on a 22-250. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hello,

I am a leupold owner and just purchased a Mueller 3-10 Sport Dot this past summer for my new varmint rifle (Rem 700 SS in 204). I do a lot of night hunting and wanted the red dot or illuminated reticle. The mueller has a red dot that lights up at the intersection of the crosshairs if you turn it on. Otherwise it is regular crosshairs with a small black dot in the middle. I have LOVED the Mueller red dot scope. For $159 Including shipping it is a great scope. Sights in great...moves where you move it...and I can throw it up at night and put the red dot where I want to shoot and shoot. The red dot is small enough to put between the eyes of a small grey fox at 100 yards+ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I cant complain escpecially for the price range. To me it performs like a $400 scope.

I own two Muellers and one Leupold... Somewhat, you're trying to compare apples and oranges. Both have great waranties and, for the money Mueller is a really good scope. But I have to think that the Leupold is a better quality scope in the long run. Maybe a little clearer under critical inspection, but for fast shooting, not noticable.

It's basically a matter of how much you want to spend. Either should give you reasonably good service. I like my Muellers and if something seriously happened to one of them, I would feel much better about replacing it than putting out the money for another Leupold.

I also own a muller 3x10 with the lited dot its on a heavy rem. varmit. I wish you could get that model with out the lited ret., as I have never used it, just makes the scope heavier. One time it lost its zero it was about 3ft. to the left I was going to take it off but just cranked it back to zero and that was about a year an a half agoand its neaver moved agin. I always wonder if there was not some hanky panky on my buddys part. Its not a loupy but it was meant to fill a lower price gap. Much better then the current low price tasco's and bushnells. Just my thoughts Jim

I have a 4-16x50 illuminated mil-dot and it works like a charm. mounted it on my tikka t3 heavy barrel and the clarity is great for the money i spent. The eye relief is obviously not as good as a loupy but it is still very good. I am 1 for 1 with the new scope and gun and don't have a complaint about it yet. If you have a little extra money I would go with the leupold but if you want to save a few dollars it's not like your taking a huge step back by buying the mueller. Let us know what you decide

This is a No-Brainer to me.....get the Leupold.

I have several Muellers, and they're on the way out. Within the past 3 months I have had one lose the seal and create moisture inside, and another that walked all over the target. Granted, they were replaced by Mueller with no questions asked, but I just can't trust them anymore after that. I have one currently that is supposed to have 1/8" adjustments, that are more like 1/4". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Sorry, but mine are slowly but surely going to be sold and replaced with Nikons. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have both. The Leupold is the better of the two, but you pay for it. I wanted a lit reticule scope for night hunting and the Leupold model was like $750 so I had to look for other options. I read a good report on the Meuller and decided to try one of the 4-16X50. It has been great so far; good sharp image, sights in very well. I had it on my 17 HMR but when I got my .204 I got a 3-10X44 red dot for the HMR. You'll love the Leupold. I have my 3-12 on my .243 which is a daytime only gun I feel.
