I'm looking for some opions on Leupold's varmint hunter reticle. I am going to be mounting it on a howa 22-250 and was wondering if any one has used one and what they thought of it...Ease of use...accuracy (ie the line are incrumented properly.. ect. VX-3 6.5-20 50mm. Lets here it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
Leupold Varmint Reticle??

I was interested in the Varmint Reticle for my coyote rifle. The windage & elavation looked usable but the first thing that came up was the lines were so fine they disappeared with certain backgrounds and were difficult to use in low light. I went with the Boone & Crockett which has heavier lines with less windage markings. It works for me but I am not shooting the little guys. Good Luck

A friend has the big game reticle and it works great. Did you know that Leupold will adjust the reticle for your load. Just tell them where it hits at the indicated ranges and they will put the reticle's where they need to be and they will make them as thick as you want.
My friend just had a Rem 700 in 300 Ultra-mag blue printed and a 28 inch tube put on along with a brake and an ultra-light stock. Comes in at about 7 pounds loaded with the Leupy 4.5 to 14 30 mm with the cutout for the barrel. Talk about a long range stinger. Were getting 3380 fps with the 180 grain Rem factory rounds.
Great scopes those Leupolds, wish I had the money to put more of them on my rifles.

Bob, i doubt they'd put in a VH reticle that's calibrated to your load. They do offer a "custom ballistically matched reticle" consisting of dots inside a Duplex system (pg. 86 '07 catalog), but i'm pretty sure the VH reticle (or any other reticle) can't be customized for subtensions.
I have the VH reticle , and love it. I think it's one of the most useful reticles out there for long-range shooting. The only thing i do not like about that reticle in the 6.5-20's is the fact that it's not calibrated at the scope's highest power where it should be.

I like mine, but the two settings, for large and small bullets are good at 13X and 17x. I asked Leupold what the values were for the other magnifications, and find the answer hard to believe; they didn't know the answer.

I wouldn't doubt that. When they 1st put out the reticle subtension info. for that reticle they actually had some of the subtension info. wrong, believe it or not.
If i had the VH reticle in the 6.5-20X, i'd crank it to 20X and just measure all the reticle subtensions @ 100 yds., then calculate the avg. % of change then recalculate the subtensions based on that avg. to get a more precise measurement. I did this with the Burris BMD reticle and it worked pretty good.

I have a 4.5-14X50 and love it. The range offsets and windage markers are very close. I went PD'ing last weekend and every time I use it, I like it better. Most of the time I just use the range finding feature built into the scope, but did a little research this time. One specific instance I remember was ranging the PD @ 308 yds., guessing the wind @ 7 mph right to left. Put the 300 yd, 10 mph. dot just a little right of the PD and SPLAT!! 400 yd results were similar but nothing is exact when shooting factory loads off shooting sticks while sitting in a chair. EVERY SINGLE shot I took, regardless of distance, would have been on a coyote sized target. I've used it in all types of light (no night time use though) and personally have had zero issues making out the different crosshairs. MHO, buy it.
