Leupold VX 1

Well, I should be getting my new upper in from D-Tech very shortly!!! Now I need to decide on a scope, I am looking in the $300 range and wanted opinions on the VX1. I would like the 4.5X14 but wanted to hear any opinions/issues you have had with it.

Is there another scope in that price range that is better?
Thanks!!!

I have a vx-1 4-12x40 with the long range duplex. Scope is clear, good eye relief and holds its zero perfectly. I've got mine on a 25-06. Sighted dead on at 200, the dots of the long range duplex are on at 300 and 400 yards and the post at 500. I know many like turrets that click rather than the friction ones that are on the vx-1. I only use the turrets for sighting in and haven't had the caps off since I origninally sighted it in, so its a non issue for me.

I tried a VX-1 4-12 LR for my 17HMR, I was very unhappy with it.

IMO - and I don't mean to offend anyone, there are better scopes for the money. Having Leupold on the end of it doesn't mean what it used to.

Curious to what specifically you didn't like? I've got a variety of scopes and mine is as clear as most of them, long range duplex is easy to use and the scope is rock solid in terms of holding zero. At least all of this is true for the one I have.

Again, I'm not trying to offend anyone, it's just my experience with one unit that I had.

I was really excited to set to get it but, wasn't happy with the clarity once I got it set up. It also seemed to need more eye relief that I could get. Maybe I was just expecting too much from it.

By no means am I "anti Leupold", just the opposite. I have bunch or VX-IIs on other rifles and love them. Just could get happy with that one.

Thanks for the replies, I don't have much experience with hi-powers and wasn't sure where to start.

Darkker...who makes the Buckmaster?

Nikon makes the Buckmasters. I have 3 of them with side focus and they have done well for me. I think they run about $350.

personally i dont like the vx1s, i dont think they are representative of good leupolds, i think there are beeter glass for the money in that price range. for $300 if i could not find a good deal on a VXII i would get a Weaver Grandslam

I have a 3X9 VX1 on a rimfire and have not had any problems with it. I would also keep my eyes open on the various classifieds around to see if you cant stumble upon something better for the same money.

I have heard horror stories about Leupold's customer service, but never had an issue with the Leupolds I have owned... That being said, for your price range Pentax Gameseeker II's are a little better glass for the money and I have broke 2 Pentax scopes(one lense and one bent bell)Pentax shipped me new scopes within a week both times, no questions asked. I am biased on this topic as I pro staff under them, but I would give 'em a look before buying a Leupold or Nikon in the same price range.

~Also, for what its worth, I don't think I've ever bought a scope for over $200 that I had any serious issues with. You get what you pay for, it just boils down to personal preference, appearance, and of course customer service. I hear Redfield (made by Leupold now) is a good scope for less ching as well.

I don't know why these scopes haven't gained more popularity. (Must be the ugly rubber grips). Awesome quality, clarity, and price.

FYI I bought just two scopes this year one a Burris FF E-1 3X9 40mm for a 17HMR the other a Leupold VX III 4.5X14 40mm CDS one cost $200 the other $540 I was impressed by both the Burris has a fine laser eched reticle & worked great on the 17HMR for P-Dogs and was just as clear as the Leupold to me. But I was so impressed by the Leupold CDS on a .223 Rem for longer shots the ability to dial range and shoot made a beliver out of me I plan on buying more Leupold VX III CDS & get the M2 Dial for windage. I plan on even doing it to my Deer Rifle. Two very good scopes one 200 the other 540.

Both times I sent my VX-1 in with a simple note of the problem. I got an appology letter back about 2-3 days later, and the scope came back a day or so after that.
So I have 0 complaints with their warranty dept.

Page,
If you really have your heart set on a VX-1, send me a pm. I'll make you a smoking deal on it.

I ran a VX1 on a muzzleloader for several years without any problems. That being said, I think there are better scopes out there for the same money.

I have a VX1 on a muzzleloader also, been there since the VX1 came out, no problems. As far as customer service IMO Leupold is second to none. The new Redfields are made by Leupold now. In the same price range maybe less, might consider a Redfield in the future.

IMO the VX-1 is WAY overpriced for the optical quality of the scope.

There are LOTs of scopes that are better than a VX-1 including Burris FFII, Nikon Buckmaster & Monarch, Vortex Viper, Minox, Sightron etc etc.
