leupold VX-3 experiences

longshot

I am thinking I want a VX-3 for my new 223 SPS varmint. I have had a vxII before and currently own a 6-20X40 weaver grandslam on my 224TTH.

I am used to the adjustable objective being on the front of the scope with my weaver so I was thinking that I would get the 6.5-20X40 one inch tube with the varmint rec. We do our shooting during good light so I dont think that the 50mm objective would make much difference. The side focus is a bit handier, but I am conditioned to using the AO.

I will use the gun for targets, groundhogs, coyotes with a trip planned to shoot prarie dogs this summer.

What are your thoughts and experiences with this scope?

thanks

i have an older vari-x3 6.5-20x40 1", it is not very bright. in most field situations with it i find myself shooting with it at 16x because the clarity is not there at the high power. i have had squirrels at 200yds or so on a hot day and could not see them at 20x, but at 16x no problem. i would go for a 50mm objective if i were to do it over.

I have a VX-3 6.5 x 20 A.O. EFR scope on a 223 and I love it. I have no problems with clarity on 20 pwr. at all, very bright and clear.

The VX3 lines is one of my favorites. I dont have the money to afford Nightforce scopes so the Leu's fit my budget and my needs. Scopes are bright and track perfectly. If you ever want to change the reticle or get different elevation/windage knobs, give Leupold a call and send it in.

Get them and you won't be dissapointed. There made right next to me here in Oregon and I've had atleast a 1/2 dozen. Everything from 3.5x10 to 6.5x20. There great scopes for the money especially the Vari-III.... I can't wait to try one of there new VX-6 2-12x42!

Currently have 7 VX-3's and couldn't be happier. I've probably owned 12+ in the last 3 years and have not had a single problem with any of them. I prefer the side focus compared to the AO on the front but if you are used to it that way it will be fine.

I had a VX3 4.5-14x40 (1" tube with no side focus or AO). At more than 10 power the scope was very dull and even sometime seemed out of focus and I'd loose color on my targets. I traded it back for the 3.5-10x40 which will go on a custom rig in process.

I've heard other reports of similar VX3's doing the same. I would opt for their long range model and at least get a 30mm tube and side focus if going over 10x magnification.

FWIW, my Dad has a VX3 4.5-14x50 (1" tube) and he claims it to be great.

It seems clear at 14X eye relief is hard to acquire at 14X but it is still very clear. I love his scope. I have a monarch 3X12X42 on my daytime AR and it is a great scope but the glass doesn't seem quite up to par with the VX3's.

Sounds like a mirage problem to me.

I have the 1.5-5x20 vx3 and love it. Great image and tracks good.

It is a little lacking in low light but i'm used to 42 mm scopes.

I think I'll put a 1.75-6x32 vx3 on the next gun.

I hear the warranty service is very good.

I've used nikon monarch 3-12 SF,weaver v16,leupy vx3, sightron big sky 3-12x42, and bushnell 4200. The bushnell 4200 elite 2.5-10 had the sweetest image in my opinion. The 4200 line is worth a look.

I have a 4.5-14x40 VX-3 on my .223 AR and I love it. The view is crisp and bright and it is just enough magnification for the long shots, but has low enough power settings to see up close. Not to mention they're warranty is the best in the buisness.
