I have heard the newer leupolds are made cheaper, Other people say the newer ones are better. So far it lookslike the newer vx-ll would be a better choice.

Which one would you buy and why?

Optically, the VXII's are better but nothing wrong with the old Vari-X-ii's. I'm still using one on a 308 and really do not mind the friction adjustments.

A friend and I laid out six rifles one day. All wearing Leupolds from VariX II & III to VX II & III. We had a clear view from 15 ft to 20 miles. After two hours of comparing the smallest details and specific settings, we both agreed that the VariX scopes were clearer.

IMO the VX2 is definitely better optically than the Vari-XII, and it should be, it has both better and more coatings.

As stated above, it also has click adjustments rather than friction, which is a good thing.

Durability is the same......

That is up for you to decide. On standard models, the difference is the VX3 has a 1 piece tube, hand adjustable dials, a better power selector ring IMO, and slightly better glass.

The VX2 will definitely get 'er done. The VX3 is just a little nicer.....
