Leupold VX-R

I'm thinking about a 2x7 VX-R for my calling rifle. We call at night, full moon over snow. Will the dot dim down enough that it will not be too bright for that? I just want a subtle dot to help out when the critters are not on a perfect background, and it seems like it would help out with running shots.
Also, from the reviews I've seen it seems like the power zoom is backwards from all my other scopes with the highest power clear to the right instead of the left. What's up with that?

Does anyone else make a simple duplex/dot scope I should look at? I'm a Leupold fan, I just don't want to overlook any options.
Thanks

Spend a little more coin and get a trijicon 3-9. My buddy ended up with a vxr because he didn't want to wait a few days for a trijicon. Now he regrets it. My dot is always just right. No batteries. Don't have to turn it on. Perfection.

I forgot about the Trijicon Accupoints, they do look nice but they are heavier and twice the price. I can get the VX-R for under $400 and my existing Aluma flip up covers will fit it. The Accupower scopes are closer in price, but are still heavier and more expensive, and still require a battery and fiddling with reticle brightness, and no auto shut off. I do like the green reticle option though. Are the reticles just black if you don't turn the AccuPower on?

I have the mil dot reticle. The center of the cross hairs is a fine green dot. Mine is the accupoint. Cannot comment on the accu power. The scope doesn't feel any heavier and the glass is outstanding if you ask me. If I could find a used 5-20 I'd sell my vortex in a heartbeat.

Get the vxr and never look back. I run vxr's and vx6 on all my hunting rifles. I also have several Trijicon sights. My go-to is always the vxr 2-7!

Thanks for the reassurance. I stopped in a store today and checked out a VX-R and a few others. I liked the VX-R, only thing I kind of didn't like was that the reticle was slightly thick, but not so much as to be a problem for calling. The dot was perfect. Glass was good, not as good as the VX-6, but it was also 1/3 of the price! They had an Accupower on display also but of course the battery was dead. Which kind of says something for the auto shut-off feature of the VX-R...

I also run a Deltapoint Pro on my Glock which has the same "auto off" feature as the VXR's. It is on me all day/every day at work and anytime I leave the house. The battery will last an honest 6 months, on my rifles I swap them out before hunting season every year, not because its necessary but just as a precaution. The batteries do not appear to be affected by extreme cold either. I will not buy anything but Leupold with illuminated reticles from here on out!

P.S. I have a .416 set up just for buffalo/dangerous game and it has a 30mm 1-4 Accupoint. It is a great scope but when the tritium runs low Trijicon charges $200 to replace it!
