Leupold VXII vs. Nikon Buckmaster

I've been going to put a new scope on my one of my big game rifles chamberd in .300 Wby. I've been going to go with the Leupold VX II 3-9 x 40. My daughters Boyfriend said he put a Nikon Buckmaster on his dad's rifle and really liked it. Now I don't know what to do? I'm probably going to still go with the VX II but not sure. Dennis

I know leupold use to show their scopes going through some pretty heavy testing for cold, water, and shock. I believe I would stay with leupold because of the recoil of the .300 Wby. and their known service if it would come apart.

I have had both and think both of them are good quality optics for the money. I actually prefer the buckmasters over the VXII and the service there isn't half bad either.

With that said I have three VXIII's and one VX3L that are very good optics but a little spendy...

The two scopes are comparable in quality. So the Leupold IMO is the hands down winner.

My friend bought a 700 ADL in 1976. This is the only rifle he has ever owned. In 1985 I talked him into upgrading his scope to a Leupold 3X9. He has had the scope ever since. In 2007 he flipped his 4-wheeler coming up out of a creek and he landed on his back. His rifle was on his back. He put a ding on the scope, and scraped it. The scope would not zero. He sent the scope back to Leupold. And you know the rest of the story.

Nikon may have a decent warrant. But no one has a warranty like Leupold!! A decent 3X9 Leupold will last a life time, even if you put it on a 22 rifle. Tom.

I have both scopes and I really like them both. To me the leupold seems a little brighter during the low light hours. I know it is more money but if money allowed I would have to pick the leupold. Either one will serve you just fine though.

I actually have both scopes. I prefer the Buckmaster. Nikon has a warranty as well. I think you will be satisfied with either scope as the quality is comparable. I think I just like the side focus.

Yes Nikon has a warranty. But it is not a Leupold warranty. The scope my friend bought so long ago-he could sell it for twice what he paid for it today?? And he could sell it fast!! There is not much of a market for used Nikon's---or at least it is not nearly the market that a used Leupold has. Not even close!! Who ever heard of a Nikon scope 20 or 25 years ago?? Buy once-cry once, and you will have a life time of satisfaction. Or buy a Nikon and take your chances as to what might happen?? That is pretty simple. Tom.

I usually buy used Leupold and Zeiss scopes. There is so much available on the internet now. I still get dealer price at some stores, but if you look really hard there are some great deals online too. Sometimes you will find a good price in the classifieds.

The Leupold VXII 3x9x40 is my favorite scope for the price. They have the best warrentee that I have used also. Nikon Buckmasters are good scopes, but I feel the VXII line is much better.

Tru dat, i got a 3x Leuopld when i bought a used rifle, i inquired about changing reticles and they told me the scope is over 30YRS OLD!, bright and clear and u KNOW it will hold a zero.

I have both and the Leupold is everything the Nikon is with a much better warranty. I lost an adjustment cap for the Nikon and the rubber seal for the rear lens has fallen out twice. It took 8 months to the get the scope cap and 4 months to get the rear seal replaced the last time I sent it in. Now I need to do it again. I have 7 Leupold scopes and have only sent one in for service after a horse wreck. It was back in three weeks looking like a new scope for $0 dollars. I will stick with Leupold. Cry once and be done with it. Great saying!!!

I'm right there with ya JCL ! if theres anyone out there that has had a bad experiance with Leupold I'd love to hear it. But like I said, they ARE high priced !

I have a 3-9-X40 Buckmaster on a syn stocked Rem 700 in .375 H&H. The .375 has not managed to kill the Nikon after load development and just blowing big holes in stuff. It still holds zero just fine.

Nikon, Luppy, flip a coin, both are good scopes.
