Leveling Scope

Plump bob equivalent...hang something heavy on a line..align your vertical cross hair on that...very helpful to have your rifle square when doing this...small level on the scope base will allow you to check that.

Some folks level cross hair with small level on top scope cap and pretty sure there is a plastic gadget held on with rubber bands and various boresight colimeters.

A friend mounts a 100 yard target and squares its edges with a level and then aligns cross hairs on the edges.

Using the plumb bob Method works very well, but you have to make sure you have the rifle level first, which creates it's own problem and puts you right back where you were. I use a plumb line sometimes. I have one hanging from a tall oak limb about 20yds off my back deck. It's just a piece of cordage with a 8" pipe wrench tied to it, works perfectly.

All my bolt guns have pic rail bases on them so I usually just use a set of feeler gauges slid under the center of the scope. It's quick and easy, takes less than 2 minutes and it will level your scope with your action/bore everytime provided you have quality components. If your interested in this method I think there is a YouTube video of it.

Using the plumb line method, to level the rifle just install your lower ring halves and set a level across one or both of them and level the rifle, then carefully set your scope it without moving the rifle and level it off the plumb line. Again, as I said before, if the rifle isnt square to begin with, the plumb line is useless.

I use a feeler gauge to level all of my scopes. I use one piece bases and the flat on the bottom of the turrets to align with the feeler gauge.
If the cross hair is canted. something is wrong with the scope, but I have never found that to be the case with better scopes. No guess work and I know that I am properly aligned.

i got a gun level from ctk precision. and also their p3 ultimate gun vise with leveling feet. clamp the rifle in the vise and strap on the level to the top flat spot on the action. adjust the feet on the vise to get the gun perfectly level. leave that level on the gun while mounting the scope to comfirm the gun stays level and didnt get moved around. now just level the top scope cap with a small torpedo level, or i guess by looking through the scope at a plumb line if you prefer. either way works but the most important factor is geting that gun 100% level first.

That assumes a whole lot, that the scope turret body is true with the reticle, and that the scope base is plumb with the bore, for starters.
I have several different instruments to do this, but the one that works the best for the price, and ease of use can be found at Brownells:

It won't work on every rifle, especially AR's, but works great on bolt rifles and assures that the reticle is plumb with the bore....assuming the bore is concentric with the outside of the barrel.
