Lightforce 7 Dykem

I know this has been brought up before and I've read some of the posts, but haven't seen where anyone has actually sprayed the Lightforce lens with dykem. If anyone has, how did it come out and how many coats did you use. I've done flashlights with it and think it would be better tha using the red lens that comes with it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
Thanks

I put dykem on my Lightforce. I used the kind in the can that you paint on. It took one coat and worked really well.

Dykem lets a LOT more light thru. Well worth it. Some surfaces reject it, so it comes out kinda like oil on water. Cleaning with denatured alcohol or something similar which will prep it but won't etch the surface of the lens should alleviate that.

I was going to use Dykem, but since the lens on my 240 is a plastic of some sort I was afraid there would be no way of removing it with out making the lens cloudy.

Hi Crapshoot,

The Lens on the 140,170,240 is made of Polycarbanate and Glass filled Nylon, The filters are made of the same materal as jet fighter Canopies,.........there tuff and almost unbreakable.......and in many colors......

The LightForce light is so powerful with the red lens on it, its not like the cheaper lights, where you need a lighter red lens to compinsate for lack of Light power ( no Pun Intended)..........

Rick, have you ever put acetone on one of the lenses? Just curious what the out come is. Acetone can be used to clean off the dykem or you can use the remover fluid(probably not any more forgiving) . I'll stick with the filter myself. For the cost of a new housing to replace the lens if I screwed it up by trying to put on or remove the dykem just aint worth it to me.

Acetone will mess up the lens. It will make it cloudy. Dykem remover will do the same. I went ahead and sprayed my lens' with dykem anyway, been using them that way for the past couple years with no complaints. I've had quite a few different spotlights in years past that I didn't spray cause I wanted the option of being able to pull the red lense off only to find myself never using that option while hunting, never pulled off the filter, shot everything under red.

My lights are used only for hunting, I prefer to hunt under red and I like the way dykem works so I have no problem spraying them. I rolled up some shade for each light, it fits the light much nicer without the snap on lens, also helps protect the lens from scratch's. If anyone decides to spray their light be aware, that stuff is now on there. I've worked with dykem most of life, we always use acetone to remove it (off metal) I don't know of anything mild that will thoroughly remove it. Anyway, just my opinion.

Tawnoper, My only concer was when I have used Dykem in the past, It would eventually flake off he glass lenses doe to the extreeme heat generated dy the long runtime as we use then (replace long run time with 5-6 hrs straight). The lens would then have to be cleaned and recoated. I have noticed that the Lightforce 240 does not get any where near hot . As a matter of fact, it barely get warm, so maybe this would not be a problem.

I haven't had a problem with it flaking off but I've never run my light continuously anywhere near what you are. I have had the color fade a bit over the course of time. On the 240 the lens is flat, makes it easy to apply the dykem and it really hasn't faded at all. On the 170 the lens comes to a point in the center, this area sometimes fades a bit on me. When it does I touch up the area as needed, works for me.
