live decoys

Any one ever use a live animal as a decoy? other than the dogs people use.

A kid at my school, says he catches rabbits, and puts a small rabbit collar on them and leashes them to a stake. He said they run around and attract coyotes.

Would this work?

thanks

Hmmm, even though in our state (Nebraska) Coyotes are not game, I am not sure I would press my luck hunting with "Live" bait.
Thats just my opinion.

I'd think it would be much easier to just call in a coyote then sit and wait for who knows how long?

Lotero, they have tons of stray cats in Carrizozo.

I mean you could call like normal, but instead of putting a decoy out, you could use the rabbit as your decoy.

Illegal in Pennsylvania...thought of that 6 years ago or more...no can do...If you decide to do it in your state, better check on the laws first. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

If you are calling and a coyote is close enough to see the (Live Decoy) then he should be killable with or with out any decoy.

Use a chicken - take a rope and tie it to its leg and the other end a block or metal stake and put it out in the open. Chicken will do its job ... at least in theory.

It works even when you are not calling...

One of the landowners that gives me permission to hunt did this with one of his wife's laying hens. Got tired of a bobcat coming in the yard every night and snatching a chicken dinner.

Tied the chicken to the corral with baling twine, sat in the barn and waited...bobcat came in to snatch the bait and he leveled it AND the chicken with a shotgun. He laughed and said he got the cat and had chicken and noodles the next night! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If we do our job there is no need for the chicken! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I actually heard some old timers talking about using chickens. I even called the conservation and ask if it was legal. After connecting me to everyone they could think of and exhausting their efforts to read in the regulation they decided that it was legal. I don't see it as cruel. Chickens by instinct flail about if tied or hindered in any way. Ever pick one up by the "talons"? They are not harmed if used as bait(tying their leg shouldn't hurt them), well if you can shoot the predator before they can get to it that is. You could theoretically bait with a chicken then take it home to the coop and do it as many times as you wanted.
I've never done this but I have thought about it.
