live trap for coyotes?

I would like to know if it is possible to catch a coyote in a live trap. Could someone please explain to me how to go about this. I need to know what size trap to buy. I live in the east and the yotes here are supposedly bigger than those in the west. I don't know if this is true I have never seen a western coyote. I assume I will need a larger trap for that reason. I currently have a 16"x16"x48" trap but have not been able to trap one with it maybe it's to small, I don't really know. I would also like it if someone could recommend bait or some type of lure that might make it little easier to catch one. I as you can tell am not much of a trapper, I'm just trying to help a friend of mine who is not able to shoot them legally so alternative methods are required. Unfortunately leg traps are out of the question as to many pets are running loose. Thanks in advance for any help you might lend on this matter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

There are several coyote trappers in my area who catch coyotes in snares designed to catch them alive. You would still need to use common sense in your sets but generally you can set them to specifically target coyotes by using the proper loop size, height from ground and location.I do not think you will have much luck getting a coyote into any type of cage or box trap. If a cage trap is your only option use the largest one you can, preferably with heavy gage wire sides to try and prevent the coyote from feeling "boxed" in. The best bait would probably be some type of live bait secured in a seperate smaller cage such as a chicken or guinea fowl.

I have tried it several times and only caught opposums and bobcats. Most coyotes will try to dig under the side of the trap the bait is in. But if you are going to try use the largest trap possible. I bought a small live rat trap, and after I caught a few large rats I would put the whole thing in the coyote trap. I usually put something dead in there also for smell. I have tried several methods such as digging a hole in the side of an embankment and putting the trap in it to look like a normal hole, stacking brush around it, and placing it in the open. usually stacking brush around it in a heavly wooded area worked the best.

Just my $.02

like mauser said it's easier to give a cat a bath.a yote would have to be starving first in my experance.
snares are one of the best ways like Troy had said.

I have come to the conclusion that this is going to be almost impossible. We will have to come up with some other method but we will keep trying until then. Thanks for the posts folks.
