I'm sure this topic has been discussed before but, I'm looking for a good load for a 20 inch 1-7.7 twist 223 Wylde barrel on an AR 15. I have a lot of Varget on hand but I'm not opposed to getting some different powder if I need to. Also I'd like a bullet that will anchor coyotes out to 300 yards and in so I'm open to any ideas. If you have any or info you'd like to share I really appreciate it in advance. Thanks!!!

My choice would be 69gr Sierra match kings, those normally shoot well with varget around 25.5gr but start lower because that's a full cases, they're not the best hunting bullet, you could also try 65gr SGK. Ether way varget is usually a good powder with the heavier bullets, try anything between 65 and 77gr with a 7.7 twist and you should do alright.

FH77,

Try 60 grain V-max bullets out. You "should" be able to get around 27 grains of Varget in the case if you use a drop tube. Don't start at 27 grains though...

It has been awhile since i used Varget.

I had good luck with REM 7.5 primers with that powder.

I have not tried it yet..... But you may consider trying out a box of the Sierra 60gr TMK's.

These lighter bullets propelled as fast as you can safely get them going, will get you the best trajectory inside 300 yards or so.

If you have to try another powder you could consider H4895. It will give you better velocity than Varget can in 223 REM. You must use CCI #41's for H4895 though.

Thank you both so much for the info. I was actually looking at the 60gr Sierra TMK or the Sierra 65gr Gamekings to try out. I'll get some and let you know how they work. Thanks again!!!

I have 1000 60gr TMK's

50 of them are loaded up and ready to test.

A death in the family and being in the long drawn out process of moving has ended my shooting sports for at least another month....

If you don't get a chance to try the TMK's i will report back on them after i shoot them out of a couple barrels.

TMK's

My 1 in 7 Palmetto Wylde performs well with the 65 gr Sierra Game King ,and 25.5 grains of Ramshot TAC , with either a Rem 7 1/2 or S&B SR primer. Right now I am using LC brass by Federal. I have also used 24 grains of Xterminator with good results.

This load kills pigs cleanly up to 150# and at reasonable ranges which for me is about 120 Yards.

Pardon for hijacking and such, but.... a couple years ago i was testing primers with TAC and saw a 50fps velocity gain coupled by a massive decrease in velocity spreads by switching from REM 7.5's to WSR primers.

Weird huh?

YMMV!

Thanks for the info! I picked up some 69gr Sierra TMKs. I think I'll start there and set what it likes. Thanks again for all the advice.
