Look E here! CFE 223

You folks who have been wanting the powder that Hornady is using in their Superformance ammo might want to take a look here. I was looking for some data to interpolate for my .20Tac under the .204 Ruger data and I saw this new powder and it looked very impressive but no mention on the Hodgdon site so I looked at the .223 loads and there it was as well. Speeds look similar to the factory Hornady Superformance that I chrono'd. If this is old news to everyone just disregard as I have been off hunting stuff and away from the computer a lot.

Check it out here. It's CFE 223

Hodgdon has loads for the CFE 223 powder for many cartridges, including the 308 family cartridges. I've been trying to find out information about it for a couple of weeks, but no luck.

Talked to the big local wholesaler, and he didn't have any info from Hodgdon about this powder, yet.

I have wondered how close this powder is to Ramshot TAC? I remembered some time back, TAC was purported to have a copper fouling agent in it. It also at the time was supposed to produce the fastest velocities for .223.

4895, Tac, and XBR all have very similar burn rates. They are differnt types of powder, 4895 is a long grain, Tac is a modified ball, and XBR is a shorter stick grainular. Adam

Any word on the CFE 223 with regards to the temp stability?? Looks like it has speed, but is up there on the pressures for the velocity. I would like to stay with temp stable stuff for my uses - 100 fps doesn't mean much even out there at 500 yd in energy, drop or wind - not for a shooter like me anyhow.

Not even close to 8208. The new chart has it slower than Varget. It is bracketed by BLC2 on the faster end and Leverovulution on the slower end. Should be a good powder to try for some folks, heavier 223 and 308 loads.

I loaded 20 rounds using the CFE223 and took them to the range on Saturday.....5 each loads beginning at 26gr and building to the max of 26.7 grains.

Shooting 60 Vmax in Winchester brass....excellent accuracy, but didn't have the chrony with me. Here's my second target, 12 rounds @ 100yds using a Nikon 3-12 scope.....and 71 year old eyes.

I came home and loaded 50 more, and will shoot them in my DPMS 16" 1 in 9 AR for coyotes.....

What kind of rifle and what length barrel please! This might be a good one in the 25 DTI using 100 grain bullets also!
THanks for the update and target!

I just noticed it listed on Hodgdons web page the other day, didn`t think it was released yet, but guess so?

I noticed a few weeks ago that Powder Valley had it for sale but I have checked a half dozen stores around here and nobody has it yet.
I am thinking it might be a good choice for the 17 Remington and the Tac 20/.204 Ruger type stuff.

I am excited to try it also, there is an excellent article about it in the new edition of Hodgdon's reloading magazine. I have to wonder if it is hard on barrels (just speculation!). I don't now if the copper removal agent is chemical or abrasive... (edited: the powder when burned coats the barrel with a type of lube/sealant.)

I would hope so also, but in the article it said that it has a lubrous ingredient that coates the bore soak in the metals pores and acts like a shield against copper. I'd say if your gonna try it better have the bore squeaky clean.

I see the HODGDON RELOADING ANNUAL MAGAZINE has this powder on the cover. I didnt get a chance to pick it up and mine has not come yet, but Im sure there will be some pretty complete data on it in there.
